"Well", he continues, decisive now, "a strong chap like yourself would no doubt be useful to our otherwise endowed Ulric here in his quest for a cart I dare say."

"I'll accompany you to town," says Koch. The mercer's son is eager to return to Ket as quickly as he may in order to inform his family that he is not dead and gone, as they must, by now, suspect.

"As you wish," Guntram replies. "We'll need some to fetch the empty cart and some to Guard the treasure, unless those left behind can also carry it all or if the cart is drawn by mule or horse and only one need fetch it."

"Superb", says Gustave.
"Well, here is my lot" he says, dumping the long hefted sack of coins on the ground. "We will be back soon...I hope", he finishes, and strolls off toward the gates.
He looks around at the assembled group but, finding none who is cleanest instead opts for the biggest, "Dieter - if you would join me? And anyone else? This will, I hope, be a short lived endevour."

Very good.
Gustave, Dieter and Koch leave the heavy treasure sacks behind and stride confidently toward Ket. What could possibly go wrong?
Relieved of their burdens, the remaining mile vanishing quickly as they pass the relatively busy fields that surround the walled town. They pass many folk, farmers and herders in the main part, and a good many of these have paused in their duties to gawk at the chimney of smoke rising over the town.
In truth, the source of the smoke appears to be confined to one area in the west. It doesn't look too bad from a distance, but it is more than enough for most folk to stop and stare.

Pretty soon the trio reach the town gate, which stands wide open at this hour, with a company of four idle looking militia Men stand about, ostensibly "on guard". They give the three grubby adventurers the most cursory glance, but make no move whatever to challenge their entry to the town proper...

"Rough day chaps?" says Gustave, approaching the militia men with a newly developed swagger, for once glad of his soiled appearance.
"I'd offer you a pipe, I would, but mi lots bin stolen on the road" he observes, patting down his empty bodice, "Still, nuffin a pint a gin and a warm pair a titties wont fix eh?", he finishes, grinning broadly and giving the nearest a knowing nudge with his elbow.
"Say", he continues, running a hand through convincingly filthy hair, "what's up with all the smoke"
Guntram turns to face Gustave, saying, "I'm sure you'll want to leave a fair number of guards for the treasure. I will help either here or in the city, as you think most helpful."
"I'll stay here with Desmond and the treasure until you return." Olaf says, "Guntram, I'd like if you stay, too. I doubt Gustave is going to need a great deal of protection on the streets of Ket. We moved about quite freely when last we were there."
"Gustave, please, make haste, and don't take time for that bath you want so badly, but return with a cloak as soon as you can so we may all enter the town."

Olaf finds a rock to sit on and does so. He stretches and scratches his head and under his armor where pests might be lurking.
"Ah, that's better!", having relaxed a little he says, "It seems like every time we go out adventuring, we come back in worse shape than before. Maybe not poorer, but beaten up. I'm looking forward to a little rest in Ket before we head out on another expedition."
Looking over at the new man in the group he says, "Guntram, while we're waiting for the others to get back, have you got any exciting tales about your adventures you'd care to share?"

The Holdfasts
Meanwhile, Ulric and Victor go in search of farmer Hubert's holdfast. They have a hope in their hearts that the old codger will be willing to sell another cart to them...
If memory serves, the Hubert farm was located in the paddocks down-slope and west of Ket, Ulric muses to himself, and sets off with Victor in tow.
The pair march half a mile or so, passing around half a dozen of so fields, many of them occupied by farmers, hands, animals and children. Half of them are standing around gazing at the smoke coming off Ket, the other half are engaged with one agricultural chore or another.
Quite a few pause to look at Ulric and Victor as the pair pass by. Some half raise their hat or give a nod of greeting. Others give suspicious grimaces, or spit unhappily.

Pretty soon, Ulric decides that one tiny farmstead looks very much like another, and finding the Hubert place might not be as easy as he had hoped...

"Right you are then", replies Gustave, "Well, we're off for a feed", and walks off into town - in search of a vendor of large-headed cloaks for small men...and some wine and cigars.
While his gait is nonchalant, his eyes are roaming, absorbing the mood of the town.
"Well, here is my lot" he says, dumping the long hefted sack of coins on the ground. "We will be back soon...I hope", he finishes, and strolls off toward the gates.
"Well Guntrum stick with us and aid out adventuring and we will look after you", says Wibert, looking at Guntrum's wide eyes on the treasure sacks. Now lets set up a guard and look out in case of any trouble.
