1974 ODnD First play with 10 yr old relative

Well im glad to say that with about 4 hours to kill I was able to get my niece to try out DnD.

She enjoyed playing the charming wise cleric (very average at everything else= rolled loads of 7s). With her party of 4 hirelings looking into why a cleric has disappeared and the local chapel fallen silent they traveled to the village in peril.

The chapel was abandoned and the cleric kidnapped (or worse) by a gang of humans and strange creatures. After a week in the wilderness and a chance encounter with a party of elves the party came upon the hills in which the missing cleric was said to have been taken

After a skirmish with some humans and the near death of one of the hirelings they made for an old ruin. Here they discovered the cleric had gone rogue and turned to the dark god and recruited strange beasts to his cause. the magic user cast sleep on a large group of orcs and was then killed by the cleric who arrived with two more orcs. The sleeping orcs where waked up one by one by the reinforcement orc whilst the other did battle. My niece subdued an orc and the cleric and the rest did finally get killed after they took down the other 2 hirelings (0 HP so ruled knocked down and out of the fight). So all alone my neice did finally manage to kill all the orcs but not before one killed a hireling. so the party was now 3!

Using her high CHA she persuaded the final orc to aid her and left the cleric tied up and with a sore head. Exploring the ruins she found a temple of evil and cleansed it- having to deal with skeletons and zombies. Turning them she was able to chase them down and kill them off. She then was abandoned by her orc ally and had a narrow escape from some green slime (a baby one). A scroll of cure light wounds healed her from the 1 hp she was left on to the giddy heights of 2 hp. A brief search discovered steps to the 2nd level but wisdom took hold and they retreated back to the village having to go a whole day without food

A quick and slightly generous DMing session which got the "pretty cool" verdict

PS
I never use minis but for this session I broke my rule and she enjoyed playing with them- the plastic wotc stuff makes sense for this- i dread allowing her use otherworld stuff

Awesome! Thanks for the report. It's great to see the next generation taking an interest in this non-electronic, social, use-your-imagination hobby! Exalt.

Man---she got a lot accomplished! I love using CHA to convince the orc to join her; pure Old School!

I used the elf encounter and villagers to get her used to the role playing rather than roll playing- I also assumed all beasties were 1hd with about 4hp and no need for magic weapons. The anti-cleric was hd2 and about 9 hp. I gave her 4 npcs as a 1 on 1 session may have been tricky- i explained that strictly speaking each npc would be another real person

She liked the idea of being a slightly burnification focused religious nutter who viewed the world as join us or ill burn you as a heretic- being charming meant she didn't need firewood that often (ill have to take credit for the extremist view of a cleric)

We got a lot done as i did a bit of scene setting and film script style cut to the chase...." you walked for 3 days through grasslands in fine weather (rub out 3 days food) and on the forth day as the sun sets your approaching a copse of trees when this happens" sort of narrative.

Plus i took it easy on her as first ever rpg session
