I don't think I ever posted an introduction, which is okay since I've been mostly lurking.
Anyway, Hi my name is Patrick and I've been playing since the woodgrain-box LBBs in 1974. Worked my way through every edition since (and a whole load of other rpg's as well).
Like some others here I tend to mine every system I try for the nuggets of gaming goodness I can filch to add to my house rules. I DM probably 99% of the time, which has its good and bad points I guess. Anyway, it's good to be here!

Hey guys. I am new here as far as posting, but I've been looking around. I am host with Sieg for Save or Die, among other things. Currently I am doing a retro clone of Holmes with some advance rules, levels and various options thrown in here and there. I know Thorkehammer did something similar, but pulled his down, and gave me his blessing to do my project.

Hello! I'm an old player from way back, learning from opening the Red Box way back in the day when roleplaying didn't have any idea of the oddities of prestige classes or experts. You went into a castle or an underground fortress, you inserted your weapons into most of the nasty chaps you found there and made off with their possessions while possibly rescuing the mission target or something like that. If you were moved by emotions or had an imaginative method for looking for traps and enemies, you didn't have a DC roll to adjudicate it. Vendettas were for men and ladies of substance, and traps were for the unthinking!
I'm rather interested in getting back into playing the old style game, so if anyone has a game going that updates regularly I'll be interested. I'd even run a game, if there was enough interest. I tend towards favouring the more social abilities, but I'm not afraid of some lovely splatty combat

Hello, I just recently found this site a week ago and after a bit of lurking have decided to register and join in on the fun. I started D&d with second edition AD&D moved on to third ed. and have reverted back to OD&D/Basic. I currently am running a campaign with one of my old players and his nephews and their friends. It is a hodgepodge of rules from across multiple rule sets but it seems to be working well. I am considering posting a thread discussing this campaign as part of what rules I am using from what edition and part campaign journal. i just need to find the proper sub-forum to properly post in. All in all another hearty hello and good gaming!

Long time lurker here, thought I'd pop in.
I'm an oldie - started with the holmes blue book and held on until mid-way through 3.5 when I washed out. OSRIC got me interested a bit again and the S&W whitebox pushed me back in feet first!

Glad to hear it. I'm particularly proud of the response I've gotten about the WB rules set. My style is loose and I think this comes across in the way the rules are presented.

Hey everyone, my name is leicamaster and I am from NC and have been gaming since 7th grade (2008). I have played all sorts of games, but I have mostly played Rifts, After the Bomb and D&D 3.5. I have been DMing for a year, but have recently gotten a couple of good role players who are capable of playing another edition of D&D besides 4th. My old players were major metagamers and when I tried playing CoC or Basic D&D with them it ended up being a disaster. This new group is great and we have had some great fun with CoC these past three weeks. I am trying to find a good game to set up a major campaign and I am just not in the mood for playing Rifts so I have decided to play OD&D. I am currently trying to get my hands on a box set for under $170. If anyone is selling please PM me. If anyone has any suggestions on first time OD&D players send me a message.

Finding real OD&D is a real chore, as the actual rulebooks tend to be pricy and WotC no longer sells legit PDF versions. If you look in our Links & Resources section there is a thread of current e-bay auctions. That might help.
Another option is the "clone" route; several companies are trying to support OD&D-style play with their own products which aren't 100% exact but play much the same.
In the meantime, if you don't mind the B/X route, you might also look into Labyrinth Lord by Goblinoid Games. It's very well supported, also has a free download version, and is a great product. LL has a booklet (free or cheap PDF) called Original Edition Characters (I think) which is designed to convert LL into OD&D. Goblinoid Games link RPG Now for PDFs
You might also take a look at Swords & Wizardry, which also has a free download or you can buy a rulebook at low cost. I'm partial to the WB version because I did it, but any of the versions would do what you want until you can find an affordable OD&D set.
A third option would be to wait (just a bit) for Delving Deeper from Brave Halflling Publishing. DD is supposed to be out really soon and has some really nice “buzz” out there about how well it will clone the original.

Yes, I'll 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, all those options! Labyrinth Lord is neat because you can combine player characters and styles from 1974 OD&D to B/X, to 1e AD&D.
S&W "Whitebox" has a great design and feel to it, and many of us are pining away for the Delving Deeper goodness. Good things come to them that wait!

Thank you for the recommendations. I have a copy of Labyrinth Lord and the Moldvay Basic set and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them. I have never played any games with either one of them because I have never had anyone who wanted to play. I have tried to find a white box set of S&W but they are fetching high prices now a days.
