As you near the intersection you find a small depression between some rather large tree roots that seems to be hidden from the road with plenty of room to start a fire, bandage your friendly neighborhood badger, and keep an eye on the road.
As you begin to settle in, and just after Octavia finishes binding Rodger's wound, Poke begins to sense the thoughts of intelligent beings in the distance, you can't be entirely sure of their thoughts at this range, but there is no sense of urgency about their minds, there are at least two of them.
edit: sorry, jumbled poke and Rodger there, I just fixed.

Making a curious burbling noise, Roger crouches and slowly looks around.
"Friends, I think we are not alone here. I sense other intelligences in the area, but they seem content to be about their business. I don't believe they know we are here. Shall we attempt to avoid them? Attempt to observe them? I regret that there is little else I can tell you at this time."

"I think we should observe, and if they are not overtly hostile, we might be able to get some news of the Medlar. I could scout, using my talents to stay hidden, and report back," says Meat.

"Ah, such a talent! And we could listen for your call, if you should experience some mishap! Then we could rush out and assist, if necessary! But certainly, a thinking being would hesitate to threaten our large group, so I hope for a peaceful exchange of knowledge. We might learn how to avoid potential dangers ahead!"
Roger rubs his paws together, and shifts his weight from one leg to the other.

"Friend Roger, can you say roughly in what direction and how far these beings lie away?" asks Meat. Once given direction, he will leave his blade and table leg behind and engage his chameleon powers.
Well aware that this will not cover sound or scent, and that the light has gone, he will slowly move towards the beings (or, if no direction is given, up the trail to the NNE, keeping between trail and wood), with frequent stops to listen. "At least if it is dark for me, it is probably twice as difficult for them to see me," he thinks to himself. He will use heightened dexterity, if necessary, to deal with any difficult footing or to avoid brush on the ground that would make noise.
He will attempt to ascertain what manner of beings these are, and understand any speech, if possible. He will then likely cautiously return to camp, unless what he hears would change his mind.
If he finds nothing in about 3/4 the distance provided by Rodger, he will turn back as well, under the assumption that the beings have proceeded in some other direction or simply out-distanced him.

Roger is able to ascertain that the beings are to the north, heading south down the path, and indicates such.
As meat travels down the path in relative silence he is able to make out a large hulking ape like figure in the distance with the heads of three men where its own should be, and something seems not quite right about its arms. It continues on its path, maybe 20 yards in the distance. The heads appear to be locked in a impassioned debate, but no words match those of your own tongue. The beast will pass by the group shortly.
Meat can press on to see the creature in a little more detail if he'd like, or return to the group.

Meat will return to the group. "Friends, a 3-headed ape man approaches. The heads argue in a language I do not understand. I do not know if it will understand us. What shall we do?"

Roger makes a little growling noise, looks up at the others and says, "It may be able to warn us of the path ahead, and could even know something of the medlar that could ease our mission. But we'd have to be careful in case it is belligerent. I suggest one or two of us move out to speak with it, while the remainder remain hidden, able to help if necessary."

Meat grabs his blade and club, and in camouflage moves up the road slightly, being in a flanking position slightly off the road. He puts his blade and club on the ground in front of him and takes an active crouching stance, ready for action.

as the beast nears Poke is able to very clearly sense their thoughts, and while they are organized and distinct, the words floating through their mind are in the same, unintelligible language. Images of food, and mattresses abound in two of the minds, while the third seems intent on plodding on.
As it nears the three of you it stops briefly, each head mumbling a different word. the two to the sides are still unintelligible, while the central head says "hello" in the common tongue.

Roger crouches in hiding, metal dagger in one paw. He concentrates carefully on keeping that paw under control, and waits; hoping the stranger proves to be friendly.

As it inches slightly closer looking quizzically in hopes of a response the full bizarre nature of its arms, and for that matter the rest of its body, becomes immediately apparent. It has arms, plural, incredibly plural. each ape like "arm" is in fact a cluster of many arms, seemingly banded together in parody of a single limb, the same is true of all of its body parts. Its as if a dozen people were disassembled and melted together to form a single oddly shaped whole.

Poke stands up, arms out and hands open. "Greetings. I am called Poke. Do you dwell near by? My friends and I are travellers, and this place is unknown to us."
