Mike Mornard joined Dave Arneson's Blackmoor game in 1971 (Age 17). He is the only known person to have been a regular player in Dave, Gary and MAR Barker's campaigns.

A correction on chronology:

1955 Born

1963 moved to Lake Geneva, WI

1971 started playing miniatures with LGTSA in Lake Geneva

Late 1971 or early 1972 or whenever the hell Gary started running Greyhawk, started playing Greyhawk

1973 moved to Minneapolis and became a player in Blackmoor

1973 started running pre-publication D&D at the U of MN wargames club, whose advisor was Prof. MAR Barker (Phil)

1973 or 1974, Phil disappears for six weeks or so and reappears with the first ditto copies of Empire of the Petal Throne, which is almost 100% identical in content to the TSR version

1974 or so, mentions to SCA friend Dave Sutherland that Phil is looking for an artist for Tekumel critters for EPT

How's that?

General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, NYC

My wife is studying to be a priest, and will graduate in 2012.

I am studying to get a degree in Congregational Development (Fundraising and capital management) and will also graduate in 2012.

Havard's original request hit just after midterms and got forgotten.

I left RPGnet because somebody made a comment about "a priest convicted of child molesting, what a surprise", and I got tired of Christians being the last unprotected group on RPGnet. If the person had happened to be homosexual, and I had said "A gay child molester, what a surprise," I would have been permabanned so fast my bum would have dropped into hyperspace.

I just got tired of the "We are going to protect all groups except Christians" unstated but enforced attitude.

Hey! Awesome, glad you see you join up in these parts.

Better to hear it directly from the source, rather than our own guesswork.

Hi Michael.

I'm just about done there, too. This is a comfy place, however. :)

Welcome to the boards Michael.

I always enjoyed your take on the game from the RPGnet forums and hope you'll be able to bring your wit and wisdom to these.

In my brief time lurking here I've found it to be a very friendly forum.

Heh. Great seeing you posting here again Mike. Hope you won't be a stranger.

You should defiently drop by the Compleat Strategist sometime when Tavis and crew are around. Oh, there's a Dave Arneson memorial con there first weekend in October IIRC, just FYI.

Michael,
thanks for taking time to post in this thread. As you may know, I have a bit of an obsession about Dave Arneson's original campaign. I have learned alot from some of the others who played in his early games, but I would also be interested in hearing more about your experiences.

A couple of questions:

1) Did you have a specific character that you remember playing? Or if not, did you have a class or race that you would frequently use?

2) Arneson ran multiple parallell games in Blackmoor. Who were the other players in the group you played with?

3) Do you remember playing in any specific locations in the game, like the Temple of the Frog, the Blackmoor Dungeon, or even some other areas?

4) Did you experience any of the truly weird ideas that Dave has become known for?

Much appreciated if you have time to answer these, or any other memories you might want to share :)

Welcome, Michael! We do like to have a relaxed atmosphere here where you can talk about the old days or the games that were around in the old days.

I for one am quite jealous that you got to know so many key RPG folks back "in the day." My contacts with both Gary and Dave happened many years after this and I can only imagine their enthusiasm level when OD&D was all just coming out in the first place. Amazing times.

I'll join the chorus in welcoming you here; I was very saddened to see you leave RPG.net, though I understand your reasons for doing so. I'm sure you'll find the atmosphere here more friendly!!

Hiya Michael,
Great to see you see you over here, too. :)

*g* Right at the end of 1972.

August 1974.
Still amazed at how quickly Phil moved; from just getting back into gaming to playing in your D&D game (letters published March & August 1974 respectively) and reworking his extensive Tékumel material into game form. :)

For those of you who are newer to the boards, you can lookup Mr. Mornard's older posts here at OD&D boards under his old forum name.
