Stone & Wood roleplaying in The Land
« Thread Started on Aug 18, 2012, 12:41pm »

One of my favourite fantasy novel series is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson - so much so that I wrote up some basic free rules for playing in The Land using the D20 OGL.

I've now started writing up the rules in S&W, which you can find here:

http://www.freewebs.com/beyondbeliefgames/Stone%20&%20Wood.pdf

Mainly its the classes and Earthpowers written up. Creatures of The Land will be next.

I have to admit, I tried reading these when I was younger. I read them a few years ago, and I remembered what a professor of mine said about them. "The mark of an excellent writer is the ability to create such an awful bastard of a character, and yet you are compelled to read more." I definately dig the world and mythos of the Land, such striking terrain features in particular.

TOTALLY in love with it all when I read it back in high school--I even have The Atlas of the Land. I haven't read it again since, but you're piquing my interest...

I can understand that. The writing can be difficult and the main character isn't very likeable. But the Land itself and the other characters (Lord Mhoram, Saltheart Foamfollower, etc) are memorable and, to my mind, somewhat more interesting than a lot of the fantasy rpg settings that are out there.
