I interpret spiking as being more than mere wedging, but actually hammering a spike into the floor on one side of a door, to act as a more substantial doorstop.

This is how I interpret it. I also allow for multiple spikes to be hammered into the floor to make it harder still to open.

It's funny, we never spiked doors or worried much about them closing in decades of (A)D&D play. Then in the first session we played using OD&D rules, my friend says he wants to wedge the door open behind them. This from a guy who does not really read the books, know game history, or visit forums, etc. It was his own idea. I found that interesting, and, as a DM who knows about all this spiking stuff, was pleased at his initiative in doing so!

Two sessions ago, the players were running from goblins. They slammed the door to a room and began to spike it.

Then they heard hammering on the other side. The goblins were spiking THEM in the room... which had no other exits.

Then the oil began to slosh in under the door...

TPK? Or did they manage to get out of it?

Well, the look on their faces when the oil burst into flames was priceless... "we are SO screwed."

The dwarf said "I can't think of anything sensible to do, so I'm going to bash the door with my axe." He rolled a 20, which I always treat as a critical hit where you get to roll twice as many dice.

A battleaxe does 1d8, so he got to roll 2d8. I told him if he got more than 12 points of damage he broke the door down. He rolled 13 points.
