 [C&C] Tainted Lands
« Thread Started on Aug 9, 2009, 11:30am »

Looks like the Troll Lords are releasing Tainted Lands at GenCon this week.

I wouldn't normally mention this on an OD&D forum, except that:
1. C&C is pretty old school in feel, similar to OD&D in many ways
2. I was a playtester for C&C and happen to like it a lot
3. James Ward is the author, and you don't get much more "old school" than him :-)

It appears to be kind of like Ravenloft in some ways, as a combination horror and fantasy campaign. I haven't heard as much as I'd like about this boxed set, but it has rocketed up to my #1 item to buy at GenCon. ;D

Anyone else into this?

Already got them holding a copy for me (the fringe benefits of being a freelancer) ;)

Jim ran several Tainted Lands games at Troll Con this year (although he had the only copy; they weren't selling them of course). I played in one of them, and it was a lot of fun! That may have been skewed since it was ran by the (generally awesome anyways) author, but it proves the set has potential to produce some fun adventures.

Well that seems kind of neat.

Pity about the extremely lame cover art, though.

Yeah, I've been hoping for more visual previews than just that one cover shot. It's okay to me, but doesn't really make this product stand out by itself.

That's not all you can say, darnit. Clearly you have some information about how we can all survive and you refuse to share it with the rest of the party. If we all get TPK'ed, it'll all be your fault. ;)

Actually, I think I read on the TLG boards that garlic and wolfsbane would be handy as well. :D

I'm not digging the cover art either, but the setting sounds like it could be cool; bonus points to the Trolls for putting it in a box. Will it be digest-sized like the C&C intro set?

One minor point: What's up with the corny "Abomination Lord" referee title? I thought "Castle Keeper" was lame enough to begin with, but this is extra-cringeworthy...

I read an interview Here and some of the things in the set I am not really sure of. If Ravenloft was Hammer Horror then the Tainted Lands sounds like Castlevania, boss monsters and all.

Not too far into it, yet.

It has an "Intro to C&C" booklet that seems a lot like the rules given out for Free RPG day. (Not too useful for me, since I have several copies of the full rulebooks, but a nice gesture for those trying C&C for the first time.

It has a Player's booklet and a CK's booklet, each with information useful for that person. The Player's book does contain information for both Vampire characters and Monster Hunter characters.

There is a general setting booklet.

There are some decent-quality dice (bright red with black numbers) which are neat but not unique. (At least they aren't those soft plastic blobs from the Collector's starter set.)

As I said, I'm still absorbing it but it's a fairly full box of stuff and looks pretty neat so far.

Can you offer any details about the Monster Hunter? Is it a class, or something else?

It's a class. I'll have to track down the rulebook and give more info when I get the chance. (Work is overwhelming at the moment....)
