Apparently, this information was just released at GenCon. Fantasy Flilght Games has acquired the rights to Star Wars gaming. They plan an X-wing combat game, some sort of card game, and have the rights to make a RPG.
Dunno if it will be any good or not, just spreading the word.

If they rename X-Wing to Star Warriors and use the open d6 system to make their RPG, I swear I'll get a second job to buy EVERYTHING they put out!

Yeah, but my guess is that they will totally overhaul and redesign everything. The odds of getting a re-printed d6 Star Wars is probably close to zero. My guess is that FFG will either take something like d20 which is "open content" and make a new version of a game, or totally create something new from scratch.

Let's hope for the latter. Even though I like Saga more than most things WOTC has put out, I am not sure how suited the d20 system is for capturing Star Wars. Perhaps it will be something more like FFG's already extant 40k RPGs? I've been meaning to look at Rogue Trader but haven't had the time or pocket money.
I honestly don't know if this is a good thing or not. As someone who owns pretty much ever Arkham Horror and Runebound product out there, not to mention harboring an obsession with Android, I obviously really like some things that FFG does, but the rest of it is really so so. It's a coin toss.

I fear that it will be something like their Warhammer 3E. Full of dice, cards, pretty pictures but devoid of playability.

If they are market-savvy they will come up with something that will not scare away fresh meat from getting into the hobby. No arcane, convoluted rules; simple equipment (d6s only is a good way to go), etc. I like WEG's d6 rules, but if the new version were even simpler, with lots of eye-catching graphics that pop out on the store shelves, I'm confident it will do well.
I can come up with a d6 game that perfectly sums up the spirit of the original Three:
1...A Jedi succeeds at anything he attempts. 2...Princess Leia gripes about something. 3...Han Solo smirks and shoots somebody (first). 4...C3P0 whines about how miserable he is. 5...R2D2 wobbles to and fro while chirping. 6...Yoda says something wise/stupid in his wacky syntax.

Something like this, no doubt.
I assume the release will be timed with the movies they're returning to the theatres.
