I'm getting tired of playing editions where none of my players have rulebooks, so I'm looking at some of the recent games out there. I hate the term "clone" because nobody clones the original, but maybe "most like" instead.
I'm going to start a list of games I've been considering trying. Feel free to add to my list or correct me if I am wrong, and also feel free to evaluate what you like or dislike about these games.
Castles & Crusades ... most like AD&D meets 3E. Labyrinth Lords ... most like B/X D&D Swords & Wizardry WB ... most like 3 LBB OD&D S&W Core or Complete ... most like 3 LBB + Supplements OSRIC ... most like AD&D BFRPG ... most like B/X D&D
Any obvious ones I have left out?

Your list seems to hit most of the biggies. I think there is "Dark Dungeons" that is most like 2E AD&D. Probably some others that escape my brain at the moment.
To comment on the games on your list, I've played some, read others. In general all seem pretty well written. I'm kind of partial in some ways to C&C because it kind of started the new wave of games in 2003 and I got to playtest it early on. I also like S&W WB because I wrote it, although I'll confess I don't really play it much. I'm a fan of Labyrinth Lords although I'm not a big race=class guy.
They're all good, to me. Perhaps others will share their experiences.

I thought Dark Dungeons was most like BECMI or Rules Compendium D&D or am I getting it confused with another retro-clone?

Labyrinth Lord + the LL Advanced Edition Companion is "most like B/X using AD&D classes, spells, and monsters."
I like it a lot and if we were going to play something "by the book" this would be it.

Indeed, it's a clone of the Rules Cyclopedia, named after the infamous Jack Chick anti-gaming tract from the 80's, and featuring in the rule-fic the Chicktian character Black Leaf, who not only doesn't die from a poison needle trap, but goes on to become Immortal.
Thanks, Akratic Wizardry...

Wizards Warriors and Wyrms is a great Holmes + meepo analogue Red Box Fantasy is sort of a BX if it were released in the 2000's Dangers & Dweomers is most like BX (BFRPG meets S&W:WB) Swords of Abandon is most like Empire of the Petal Throne Hack Master 4th ed is most like 2nd ed Big Brown Book is most like OD&D
Adventures Dark and Deep is an attempt at reimagining a Gygaxian 2nd ed
There are a few incomplete 2nd ed clones floating about that may or may not be being worked on. Seems to be a hard edition to clone. Gold and Glory Realms of Eternal Epic / Myth & Magic Black Book Advanced

| Argh. That's the one I was thinking of; I got them confused.
I should stick to stuff I know something about.

I would recommend C&C or BFRPG; neither have racial level limits and both compensate humans for it. To me, that is the best "modern sensibility" on top of the old beloved rule system you're gonna want. That, and both have ascending ac.

I like to stockpile AD&D 1e PHBs. They are pretty easy to get pretty cheap on eBay in pretty good condition. I suppose print runs in those days far exceeded anything we’re seeing today. Anyway, I can then sell or gift them to my players. Problem solved!

Speaking of which, there are a ton of these games I've never even heard of! How did that happen?
I know I can (and will!) google, but may I respectfully request that links be added...
