Nice job everyone, it looks like you might make it out of the tunnel alive after all! I'll hand out experience awards once you guys reach town or other safe haven to rest and recuperate.
Now that you've played through a few examples of Chainmail mass combat and one man-to-man fight, what are your thoughts? Do you want to continue with Chainmail, or switch to "regular" d20-based combat?

Chainmail is fine with me. Mass combat is easy to DM. I'll try to incorporate more fights with armed humanoids in the next chapter so we can explore the man-to-man combat table.
If we get bored with Chainmail I will consider switching to d20 or even to LotFP when the new Carcosa is released.

The Shadow has no opinion regarding this - he doesn't have to roll any dice, just read what was rolled, so as long as 75% of the rolls are hits, he's cool.
The Chainmail rules are, arguably, slightly harder to follow. This is simply just due to unfamiliarity.

I just wanted to point out, since it was never explicitly stated, that this is a "sandbox" campaign. I did "railroad" you guys (literally!) for the introductory adventure in the tunnel, but from now on, you're free to decide your own goals, destinations, and agenda. Good luck!
ps and if you ever get bored, just let me know and I'll send in some wandering monsters!

Sandbox-style is excellent! Can you give a brief overview of the tech-level of this campaign world? There are trains - are there also planes? Comm devices & weapons of similar complexity? Or is most of the rest of the hi-tech stuff CARCOSA standard, ie. Space Alien?

My vision of the setting is that tech level varies widely from culture to culture. For example one village hunts giant jungle apes with blowguns, while their neighbors sit in high stone towers mesmerized by the digital displays of strange adding machines.
Until very recently, most of humanity was very provincial, having little interaction with other cultures and colors. The invention of the Railroad (it's THE Monorail, not a monorail) has changed all this by allowing easy travel between the inland and the coast. In other words you are living in a predominantly iron-age world on the brink of an industrial revolution.
It is possible that your people back home have strange flying machines and other wonders, but also equally likely they live in huts with bronze-age technology. I can tell you a few things about the Green Man culture you'll encounter on this leg of the journey:
Arkham is a well-known city due to the world-class Miskatonic University (and also due to dark rumors of witchcraft and sorcery). The University attracts students and faculty from near and far; likewise it sponsors expeditions (archaeological, anthropological, geological, zoological, etc.) all over the world. In Arkham you will likely encounter people from all cultures, as well as ideas and technology from far away (and long ago).
Nearby Kingsport is a seafaring town. Her wooden sailing ships are considered "high tech" and are capable of sailing around the world. No doubt this global trade has brought great wealth to Kingsport, but it is jealously guarded by greedy old-money families who live in high-walled mansions on the sea cliffs.
As you move farther from the cities (Aylesbury for example) more and more people cling to the "old ways." Their God-fearing, (dwindling) agricultural-economy, xenophobic culture is reminiscent of Puritan New England with a strong Lovecraft influence.
Space alien and other high-tech artifacts are known to exist but are very rare and dangerous. Likely they would be a plot hook in and of themselves... Sorcery on the other hand is common, though the extent to which it is embraced or even tolerated varies from culture to culture.
I'm sure you'll learn more through actual play....

Mush, is there a map of the track and the cities somewhere? I seem to recall seeing one, but I think it was in the middle of a thread. Can we get a thread started that is for information like this so we don't have to dig through a ton of posts to find it?

Good suggestion! I will try to post a map tonight after work.

Sorry I didn't have a chance to make a maps-n-stuff thread last night, maybe over the weekend. Here's a repost of the previous map to tide you over (please ignore all real-world cities like Boston):
