 Independent Scenario 1: "The Powers that be...."
« Thread Started on May 9, 2011, 9:34am »

First National Bank; 1:30pm; Monday, September 12, 1927; Lakefront City, Wisconsin

"Del":

It was an overcast; ugly gray day outside; cold wind blowing off the lake making the people walking outside in this part of the city clutch thier coats tight to their bodies to keep warm or yanking thier hats down to ensure they didn't blow off in the wind.

Inside the First National Bank; things were pretty much 'business as usual'. Delores 'Del' Kennedy was sitting in her chair as one of the bank's three Tellers on duty and dealing with a perfectly obnoxious older man who spoke very condescendingly to her; he seemed to beleive that because she was a woman, she clearly couldn't be trusted with something as valuble as money.

Del huffed and did all she could to stay calm and managed to finish his transaction with a fake smile plastered on her face. As he walked away, she turned to her co-worker; fellow teller Janet Farmer and rolled her eyes. Janet shyly smiled back. The two women couldn't have been more different; outspoken and flamboyant Del and quiet and polite Janet. However, they were fast friends; of course; Del couldn't imagine anyone NOT liking Janet; she was just too sweet.

Del was about to ask how her friend how her date wtih Tim Henson went on Saturday night when four men came walking into the Bank at the same time and in a very orderly manner. Something bothered her about these men; though she couldn't quite pin down exactly what it was. Two of the men broke off and came to stand close to the Bank Guard on duty; handsome young Stefan Radu. Stefan was a Romanian immigrant who worked very hard and had vowed to do his best to stop any robbery attempts. However, his courage and his .38 revolver were really his only assets to help ensure that he kept this vow.

The other two men split and one moved towards the vault door while the other moved over towards the tellers. Suddenly they pulled guns and one of them yelled out; "Allright! This is a stick-up! Everybody over against the wall; don't make any sudden moves and nobody gets hurt!" At the same time; the two men by Stefan pulled out weapons and clubbed him first in the belly and then in the back of the head. The poor young man had no chance to draw his weapon before he was knocked to the floor. Del was in a state of shock as she recognized the man closest to the Tellers; it was the unmistakable handsome face of Cody Powers; the notorious bank-robber. He smiled at her and gestured with one of the two automatic pistols he held in his hands for her to come out from behind the Teller screen and move against the wall with the rest of the crowd....

"Gus":

Gustavus 'Gus' Babushka plodded down the cold streets next to little Salvatore 'Sal'Aiello; a jeweller he had done a case for; tracking down an ex co-worker who had been stealing a gemstone here and there. Sal had been impressed by the P.I.'s abilities and when he later learned that 'Gus' wasn't doing too well finanically at the moment; he offered him a job escorting him to the Bank twice a month to pick-up or deposit Gems. 'Gus' readily agreed and it had quickly become a regular occurance for the two men.

They walked into the bank in a comfortable silence and Sal was soon talking to one of the Tellers who quickly called out one of the Bank Officers; Mr. Brian Figgins; who then led the two to the vault. Gus saw another P.I. he had a passing aquaitence with; Fred Baumgartner; talking with a man about a loan. Both men nodded to one another and went about thier respective buisness.

'Gus' was practically sleeping on his feet as the jeweller counted out the gems from his case and Figgins noted each on a form before putting them into a safe. Suddenly there were yells and screams and 'Gus' heard the unmistakable sound of a bankrobber yelling out that the place was about to get robbed and that nobody better do anything stupid...

"Fred":

The P.I. buisness was slowly but surely coming along for Fred Baumgartner and his partner; Richard Chambers. However, they needed a bigger office than the tiny, closet-sized room they were using now. It was so small that there was only room for one desk; so they had to take turns using it. It was Richard's day off; so Fred was working today. However, they had both agreed to use thier pool of saved money to attempt to get a loan for enough money to rent an office in the new Preston Building; within sight from the First National Bank.

Fred was talking to the bank's vice-president and chief loan officer; Mr. Angus MacPherson about that loan; and he was pretty sure he had just about bargained with the Scotsman as much as he could when the four men walked in. Fred glanced up and immediately noticed that all four were packing weapons under thier coats. A moment later; they confirmed it when two of them knocked out the security guard and the other two pulled weapons to herd the crowd of people over agaisnt the wall and one of them moved towards the vault.

The two by the security guard had pulled a .45 automatic and a sawed-off pump-action shotgun. Of the two that were herding people against the wall; one was packing a Thompson Submachinegun with a straight 20 round clip; and the other carried a pair of Colt .32 automatics. The man with the Thompson quickly moved towards the vault as the man with the twin pistols waved both the Tellers and Angus and he towards the wall with either pistol. Both of their faces were unmistakable to Fred as he got a good view of both; the man with the Tommy gun was Mack "Lucky" Lamb; and Mister two-guns was the one and only Cody Powers...

"Joe":

Joeseph Clark was a "cub" reporter for the Independent paper in the city; the Herald Examiner. It was also the least read of the three major papers; but Joe was proud of the Paper's reputation for honesty and rising above politics.

Today, he was being granted an interview by the president of First National Bank; Mr. Charles Grant in his office in the back of the bank. The interview was mainly about the rash of bank-robberies recently hitting Lakefront City and its suburbs by the notorious "Powers" gang and what steps the Bank had taken to prevent such a robbery from occuring.

Joe found Grant to be a friendly and interesting 52 year old man. He was a big man with an intimidating barrel-chest and several scars; he had served with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough-riders in the Spanish-American war some 30 years back and was fiercly proud of that fact.

In addition to having a full time security guard; he had also recently had a silent alarm rigged under the Teller's desks that would sound in the back kitchen of Velma's restuarant across the street. All of the employees there knew what it meant and that they were to call the cops in the event of hearing that alarm.

Grant also laughed and showed Joe his personal Mauser 'Broomhandle' pistol that he kept locked in his desk in the event of any attempt to rob 'his' bank. Joe almost jumped out of his seat when he heard the shouts that indicated that a robbery attempt was indeed occuring. His eyes opened wide in wonder at the irony of the timing of the event. Grant's facial expression however had turned deadly serious and he loaded his pistol and said in a clipped voice; "Stay here"; while he moved carefully to the door and opened it up for a look....

Del smiles back at Cody in return as her hand reaches for the silent alarm, then she quickly drops back to a neutral expression and nods at his order. She hopes that he didn't catch the look of recognition on her face...

If she manages to press the alarm undiscovered, she then moves over against the wall with the other people.

Joe sits still while Grant goes to the door for a look, but as soon as he leaves the office, Joe will be right behind him.

He has a reporter's notebook and pencil in his hand (with spare pencils in his pocket; fountain pens tend to leak on him), but he also has his trusty camera over his shoulder and a pocketful of flashbulbs.

For now, I will move towards the wall with the other people. Is Cody within shooting range? Is he making moves to rob us or just herding us while his cronies take care of the vault?

Gus shakes the cobwebs out, and turns to Sal.
"Stay here, put case in safe. Me and my boys will see what problem is."

Gus stalks towards the vault door, intending to shut it behind him as he walks out.

First National Bank; 1:33pm; Monday, September 12, 1927; Lakefront City, Wisconsin

"Del": The corner of Cody Power's lips pulled up into a charming smirk in Delores' direction as he gestured for her and Janet to join the press of people moving over against the wall. She did so, moving with her friend to join the dozen or so people being held up against the wall by an intense young red-headed man with a sawn-off shotgun and a handsome, dirty-blond haired young man with an automatic pistol in his hand.

Cody spoke up; "Red; get over here and unload the money at the tellers; Sandy; keep a sharp lookout on the crowd. I'm gonna go check on Lucky."

With that, Cody moved towards the vault, when from one of the doorways in the back, Mr. Charles Grant; the Bank President himself, appeared with a pistol pointed right at Powers. He fired a shot that grazed Cody's left arm; while Cody cut loose a perfectly placed shot with his right-hand pistol that put a shot into Mr. Grant's heart. The veteran of San Juan Hill staggered back a step and fell on his face. Suddenly screams broke out from the crowd as the echo of the shots rang throughout the bank; and the relatively orderly bankrobbery exploded into a confused mess....

"Gus":

Gus pulled out his powerfull Smith and Wesson 1917 .45 revolver and moved towards the bank vault door when a slim, middle-aged man came through the door with a Thompson Submachinegun fitted with a 20 shot clip in one hand and a large sack in the other. The two spotted each other at the same time and an eerie pause passed while both were suprised at coming unexpectedly face to face with an armed stranger.

The man with the Tommy Gun then cracked a devil-may-care grin and said with a bit of an Irish accent; "Allright then boyo; you're gonna be wantin' to put that rod on the ground, now, aint'cha?"; while levelling his Tommy at the big P.I. The sudden sounds of a pair of gunshots and accompanying screams threw off the man's concentration for a moment as he let out a quiet curse of; "Oh, bugger me!", before his attention returned to Gus...

"Fred"

Baumgartner found himself being herded against the wall by the bank robbers and quickly saw that the more dangerous threats; the man with the shotgun and of course, Cody Powers himself, were soon busy with other tasks; leaving only the blond-haired man to directly deal with. His observent eyes had seen both of the pretty Tellers press what he hoped were quickly-answered alarm buttons before they were moved against the wall; and Fred quietly reached for the derringer he kept in an ankle holster. To his shock; the blond haired man not only saw the motion, he leaned in close to the Detective....

In a whisper; the man said; "Look; I don't know if you're an off duty cop or what; but my name's Paul Sand and I'm an undercover Federal Agent. I'm going to do my best to stop this robbery; but I could really use your help. When I give the signal; I want you to cover the red-head with the shotgun, okay?" Before Sand had a chance to say anything else; a pair of shots echoed throughout the bank; and he whirled to see Cody grazed and an old man with a Mauser "broomhandle" pistol fall on his face across the hall. Then somebody started screaming and Paul nudged Fred and said; "Let's take 'em now!", while aiming his .45 at Cody....

"Joe":

Impressed by Grant's courage and excited at the thought of being able to give a first-hand account of a bank-robbery; Joe got up and quickly and quietly followed the bank president's lead.

Charles Grant took aim with his pistol and fired a shot that unfortunately only grazed his target; a man wielding a pair of pistols who fired back and who drilled poor Mr. Grant right in the heart.

The Bank President fell unmoving onto his face right in front of Joe's eyes and Joe's mouth fell open in shock at the action unfolding all around him. His attention however was quickly drawn by one of the other bank robbers who seemed to be aiming his pistol right at Cody and what looked to be one of the bank patrons who had been herded against the wall drawing a hold-out pistol from an ankle holster.

In his excitement; Joe dropped to the ground and began to write down what was happening while he tried to look around and see everybody and everything at once...

Joe plugs a fresh flashbulb in his trusty camera and focuses on the Infamous Cody Powers.

"Cody!" he yells, crouching and aiming upwards. "Smile!"

Del can't help but give Cody a coquettish smile in response to his charming smirk as she is herded over towards the wall.

When the gunfire breaks out, she crouches down towards the floor, pulling Janet with her. In the ensuing chaos, she keeps one hand on Janet's arm and with the other reaches into her purse and closes her hand around her pocket pistol...

As calmly as I can, I will level the Derringer at the red-headed shotgunner and fire the first shot (it's a two shot gun, IIRC) and pray that I survive today and that the gent that just whispered to me is on the level... otherwise the second bullet is headed towards him!

First National Bank; 1:35pm; Monday, September 12, 1927; Lakefront City, Wisconsin

"Del":

Delores' heart starts beating faster and faster in her chest as the action explodes all around her. Next to hear, she can hear Janet Farmer doing her best to keep from screaming in fright and sees tears trickle down from her eyes...

She manages to get her hand around her little holdout pistol when more shots suddenly erupt with deafening noise all around her. It's all she can do not to fall to the ground and throw her hands over her head, which with a quick look around, she sees that that is EXACTLY what most of the other patrons are doing...

With a shaking hand a deep breath, she manages to clear her little pistol out of her purse and take a second to look a bit closer at the action unfolding all around her...

"Gus":

Gus makes shooing motions with his pistol at "Lucky" and is a bit suprised when the distracted gangster looks around wildly for a moment and then with a quick grin says; "Allright chaps; I'll be back with ye soon"; and steps out, closing the vault door behind him. From the other side of the heavy steel door; the muffled sounds of gunfire; cursing and screaming can be heard....

Gus looks over at Sal; who looks back at him and shrugs...

"Fred"

Baumgartner decides to follow the lead of the young, undercover Fed. and takes aim at the red-haired, shotgun-wielding bankrobber with his derringer. "Sandy" aims his .45 at Cody and yells out; "Freeze Cody! I'm with the Bureau of Investigation and you're under arrest!"

Cody and "Red's" mouths hang open in shock for a moment and then the echo of the vault door being closed rings throughout the bank and at about the same time a shout of "Cody! Smile!" is heard...

Paul Sand's attention is snapped for a brief moment as he looks over at a confused Lucky looking this way and that and pointing his Thomspon while yelling out; "What the bloody hell is going on out here?" At the same time; Cody and Red both yell out; "Backstabber!"; and cut loose with shots at poor Sand. Sand is spun around from the combined impact of a pistol shot to the head and a shotgun blast to the chest and he falls in a bloody heap to the ground.

Lost in the report of the gunfire is the quieter sound of a small caliber Derringer being fired into the side of "Red". Indeed, the red-haired bankrobber takes a step back, reaching over his right hand to clutch his wound while looking around increduously for the source of his wound. Seeing a man with a derringer pointed at him and a woman with a small-caliber pistol pointing his way; he wavers, with his shotgun first pointing at one and then the other. He doesn't look too steady on his feet....

"Joe"

Joe yells over; "Cody! Smile"; while pointing his camera at him and is rewarded with an annoyed look and gun pointing his way before Cody suddenly snaps back towards the strange sight of one of his men yelling at him that he's under arrest. A moment of almost comical shock is on the faces of Cody and his red-haired, shotgun-wielding companion when the bank-robber who had gone into the vault suddenly shuts the door and yells out in an Irish-accented voice; "What in the bloddy hell is going on out here?"

Joe then sees both Cody and "Red" shoot thier former partner in crime while one of the patrons who had been herded over against the wall fired a shot from his derringer into the "Red's" side. An attractive young woman was also raising a small hold-out pistol towards the two bank-robbers with a shaking hand.

Just to keep things even MORE interesting; suddenly the front door of the bank burst open and a policeman in uniform burst in with his revolver in hand and quickly came face to face with the Irish gangster with a Tommy-gun in his hand.....

This was quickly turning out to be just about the most exciting day of Joe's life! He had his camera at the ready, not sure who to photograph first. Out of the corner of his eye; he could see the Mauser "Broomhandle" pistol that poor Mr. Grant had fired, within easy reach of his right arm; dropped thier by the late Bank President....

Joe takes the picture of Cody; he's the story.

And after that, he may or may not grab the Mauser. His priorities are:

1) Wind the camera,
2) Pop in a new flash bulb, and
3) Not get shot while doing so.

(Joe doesn't want to BE the story, he just wants to GET the story. He's perfectly happy to let others be the hero.)

Del, never having fired her gun before, now hesitates to shoot. However, when "Red" points the shotgun her way, she winces and pulls the trigger.

Seeing the lady packing heat taking a shot at "Red", I'll shift calmly over to Cody and shoot him. I'm going to take my time and be deliberate, looking for a kill shot/center mass. I get one chance at this with Cody befuddled.

Gus strides to the vault door and slowly tries to open it.
