Adventure #12 - Search for the Crypt « Thread Started on Jan 10, 2011, 8:42am »
You decide to head out of the Singing Mountain Inn before it gets too late to draw attention, and convene at the Red Axe, which has become a second hang out for you. Some of the dwarves are upset at so many humans at one time, but some ale and good times soothe their tempers. You bid goodbye after midnight, and then march the mostly deserted streets right to the old boarded up well.
It is a chilly fall night, and the rising moon sheds just enough light not to trip over your feet. You gather round the well, anxious to do your work before attention is drawn to you.

Yhency and his men carry the long ladder and accompanying long plank that fits over it that we intend to bring into the dungeon to cross that pit. We can also use the ladder to climb down the well.
Just before we are ready to descend, Yhency casts protection from evil on himself, duration 1 hour.

If a retractable ladder was available, we'd have probably scored that. In any event, if we are talking about a 10 foot wide pit (and I'm on the train now with little internet so I can't go back and look), then we'd need a 12 foot long ladder.

Can the elves see in dark well enough to see down the well without torches yet? If we could wait until we're down the well to light torches, that would provide a little less cause for attention.
Also, anyone have ideas how we're going to keep the well from being covered over while we're down there, or the boards lying on the ground tipping people off?

OK, the elves notice the well is really deep (beyond their site) but also that there are rungs on one side of the well, so that people can obviously climb down them - but to where?

Hmm, let's start by lighting a torch and dropping it down. It may attract a bit of attention, but then we can see what's up down there before getting us all on the ladder...
We will implement Flandil's idea of the last person down the well pulling the boards back over as best they can once we're ready to descend.

The lit torch whizzes down for a long while before going *thunk* wetly at the bottom of the well, where it still burns. Patronus says "Just over 3 seconds I reckon - that makes it 200' deep".
The rungs go down for at least 10 feet, after that you can not tell

Gallaine lights her lantern, then ties it so that it hangs from the back of her sword-belt, or from a rope that she slings over her shoulder, and then she climbs down the rungs.
Ideally, the lantern will hang out of her way and not interfere with her climbing.
If this goes as planned, she descends as far as the rungs allow...
