"Sure, why not?" William says. He goes in the room and positions himself to the right of the door so that he can attack whatever might come through, but so as not to block any spells our party wishes to throw through the door.

Someone else can open it.
Kell follows William through the door into the room, keeping a close eye out for any spiders that might be hiding on the ceiling.
With William at one side of the door, Kell examines the secret door looking for any dangers, but that's not his forte, so he also turns and asks, "Anybody here have any special skills in checking for traps and such?"
Once the door is well examined, and if it is certified trap free, Kell with pull it open keeping it between himself and whatever might be behind it. William can have first shot at whatever spills out!

Gallaine is at the back in case of rear attack. She has sharp eyes, a lantern for light, and the experience of a 3rd level fighting-man to (perhaps?) give pause to a would be attacker.
She doesn't have any problem with Jariel not being in the rear rank though.
Kell and William sort of give the door an inept onceover. After encouragement from Yhency, Scamper worms himself to the front and puts on a big show, checking the door. "It's just a thin piece of wood, not really a door. You just need to bash it open with a hammer or something." He stands around, fascinated, as Kell and William give it a bash. It splinters open and a narrow, slanted hallway looks like it leads into a small room. Your lantern light shows the glitter or metal on the floor up ahead.
William looks, but doesn't venture inside the passage until he's pretty sure there are no spiders.
Kell puts out his hand to hold William back saying, "Hold a minute and lets be sure."
"Who has that net?" Kell whispers loudly over his shoulder, "Pass it up here and I'll cast it into the room."
If he gets the net, Kell puts it on the end of his spear and waves it inside the room, up and down and then back and forth, and then flips the net off his spear onto the floor of the room. If he doesn't get the net, he'll still wave his spear around the room from outside the door.
OOC: Kell is trying to make sure that any spiders have a chance to jump down from the ceiling onto the waving net before they jump down on his, or William's, head!
If it looks clear, Kell will step aside and let William lead on...

Then, if nobody else has gone forth, he'll go in.
Kell will follow William keeping a wary eye out for hiding beasties!

Kell plays around with the net, and as his spear touches the floor of the narrow corridor, the floor crumbles away, falling into black nothingness! The first person to cross the threshold would certainly have taken a tumble! The entire narrow corridor is now one black pit
