It seems like Yhency is advertising for henchmen right now. If he likes the look of any of the four soldiers, he could try to lure some as henchmen. If he has specific wants in his ad, he should lay them out so the right people apply. Also, Yhency's whispering campaign is going to take him a few weeks, lots of bar-hopping, and probably about 50 gp by the end of it. I will just abstract it unless there is some need to get detailed. Inns/taverns are good places to acquire henchmen also

Flandil and Jariel stop into the Red Axe Ale House. Being mid-morning, it has just opened, and the crowd is sparse. This is obviously a dwarf hang out - the ceiling looks just high enough for a man, the booths are sturdy wood, and the seats are a bit low. Four dwarves sit at a table playing diamondback and drinking coffee, and a dwarven bartender is polishing the bar while he chats with an idle (dwarven) barmaid. In the corner, smoking a pipe, sits an old man with a long beard.
Talking stops as the dwarves all stare, astonished, at two elves walking into their establishment. The old man looks up, and his piercing eyes search both of you. He smiles to himself keeps smoking.
The Goblin Inn people head into the city. There used to be an ordnance against wearing plate mail (only soldiers of Verbosh could) but it has ben rescinded since the spider troubles began.
At the mercenary guild, there are four ex-soldiers available as body guards at 1 gp/day
NOTE: All these people hired are being hired as hirelings, not henchmen. A henchman would be somebody you are seriously interested in investing time and money in, paying him well and bringing along on adventures
Hirelings won't go under the city with you to fight spiders, but henchmen will...for a share of the booty. BTW, aren't we missing someone? Isn't Zarano over at the sleeperhouse...I mean the Roadhouse ...and Patronus is off pestering priests in the temples isn't he? We need to let them know we're moving the party to the Singing Mountain Inn, too.

Flandil nods politely to the watching Dwarves, then confidently makes his way across to the old man's corner as if his presence here were nothing out of the ordinary. "Good day, venerable sir." He says with a florid bow, "Be you the renowned Mathan?" If the answer is in the affirmative, Flandil will ask if there is anywhere they might speak in private. In any case, he will outline his need for a 2nd-level spellbook.

Flandil chats with Mathan, who is amused to see an elf not only in the city, but in a dwarven bar, no less! Listening to Flandil's dilemma, he says "Ah yes, Aranthol is squeezing you, isn't he. You don't have too many options lad. Now I like the cut of your jib, so to speak, so I might do a favor for you. I have plenty of time on my hands, but my funds are not unlimited, and their are expenses in creating a book. Just the cost of the magical components is more than 2000 gold pieces, and then there is the labor...
I could copy my spell book for you, probably even do a spell per day. Hmmm. let's say 2 weeks, 3000 gold pieces, and you fetch the materials I would need. I'll do it right here in tavern. It might be fun

Patronus wanders around town, and the only other temple he can find is the Temple of Tyr. He brightens as he recognizes another North god. The temple is small and dirty. An acolyte is trying to sweep the grimy stone floor of the foyer as Patronus enters. Inside the temple, he sees a main chamber with a statue of a war god with upraised sword. On the walls are poorly painted murals of berserkers in battle with giants.
Just finishing up his private worship is the curate. He is missing his left leg, and uses a crutch. He is also ugly and worn-out looking. He sees Patronus and calls out a friendly greeting.

Flandil considers Mathan's offer. "I like the way you think, sir. If it were solely up to me I would take up your offer in a trice, but regretfully I have other obligations to which I am committed.", Flandil pauses, shaking his head sadly. "I will have to check with my comrades, for such as you propose may take up my time and energy which I have already pledged myself to direct elsewhere. I shall be in touch, by the end of the day with any luck!" Flandil takes his leave of Mathan, first proclaiming aloud (to Mathan and the Dwarves) that he shall be purchasing the next round of drinks! He then heads over to the bar to settle the tab before departing for the next name on his list. (He at least wants to check out Nerojoule and Richolan who were both earlier recommended as potential sources of spellbooks before committing himself to Mathan).
((OOC: Flandil is happy to take a couple of weeks 'downtime' to have this spellbook made up (or maybe not 'downtime' if the procuring of materials proves to be difficult), but he'd rather not be doing so if everyone else is out and about getting into trouble below the city while Flandil is busy gathering spellbook materials...))

Gallaine decides that she has no need of hirelings -- for one thing her purse is not overfull -- and for another she prefers the absence of such responsibilities.
In her idle time about the city she roves the lane of smiths, fletchers and bowyers (if there is such a place) on the lookout for any gracefully created bow or arrows. She also keeps an eye open for a decent sword -- for she does not yet even possess one!

Mathan explains to Flandil that Flandil's time would not be onerous, just a simple one-two hour shopping trip to the magic store with a list of materials that Mathan needs. He could happily adventure/explore while Mathan works. He even promises to thow in a bonus 2nd level spell of his own devising - no point in his dying without passing his knowledge on!

Gallaine finds a bowyer right across from the magistrate's office. She notices Patronus entering the nearby Temple of Tyr and waves.
The bowyer's shop is made of warm, comforting wood. The proprietor looks up and smiles at the elven lass. Gallaine is startled when she realizes that the proprietor is an elf, but as large as a human. Could this be one of those whispered-about half-elves?

Flandil, with his bodyguards to guide him, treks all the way across the city to the other side of the city, to find the alchemist's shop nestled in a corner of the city's hexagonal walls, close to the imposing Spider Temple.
Nerojoule is a nervous, fidgeting man with balding hair and eye-glasses. "Ah yes, good customers. Are you here to buy a potion? I just made a Flying potion, my best one yet, ha ha! Or perhaps to sell? I give excellent rates you know, yes I do, ha ha! Nerojoule the Genius, that's what they call me, ha ha !"

"Greetings and exaltations wise and travelled one," Gallaine replies in the formal way of Wildwood (in Elvish, of course!) as she makes a graceful curtsy of her people. "I am in search of a quality bow and ammunition to replace this simple, utilitarian device," she explains, indicating her perfectly ordinary short bow. "Could it be that you might supply me with such?"

"I am sorry, my elvish is poor. Let us speak in Common" He bows, to show no offense.
He continues in the common tongue of men. "I have bows of elven yew, both long and short. I also make crossbows and slings. Guaranteed not to break for one year or your next bow is half price. The special ammunition I have is my sling stones. I have silver ones for 5 gold each. There are some spiders that are rumored only to be affected by silver weapons these days. I also have special glass stones filled with oil or holy water, at 25 gold each. And of course I have silver arrows and bolts
