I think we can take on Orc raiders, so we should take the North Road. I'm wary of boating on a swift river and we would not be able to take horses. Also, I hear dwarves don't float or swim well.

Question for DM, does magic armor encumber less? I have a set of chain for wearing on my horse, but if I can wear the magic armor, I wouldn't need the chain.

On the other hand, if I can pick up a warhorse in Canyon Lake, that would be nice, but it's a pretty small town.

I make magic armor weigh the same, except in special cases. There would be only crappy donkeys or ponies available here

If the raft is big enough, there should be plenty of space even for livestock (I'm thinking barge here).

Do we have any word on the river itself? Swift isn't bad, but if it narrows then that's when you get white water (and white knuckles as well). I'm thinking about the river because it's the most direct route (can't really get lost going downstream...)

But if we do decide to go by land, we should find a caravan heading to Verbosh and travel with them. There is safety in numbers after all.

1) You would have to make a raft (or pay for one to be made)

2) Nobody in the town has ever taken the river to Verbosh, they have always trekked the road, so the river is an unknown quantity

3) There are no caravans leaving from this sleepy hamlet

Gallaine orders a deep vessel of the tavern's best wine before joining Yhency and the Dwarf. Drink and gossip is more important than discussing theology with the newly arrived missionary.

"Hello, Master Dwarf," she says, "I'm Gallaine, I hail from Wildwood where this strange game of pitchers and catchers is not played. Tell me more of it..."

Kell pulls out a chair and plops down in it next to Gallaine, "Well, ya see. I don't know how elves do it, but how my folk do it is like this."

"There's two teams a'two, ya see. A pitcher and a catcher. The pitchers, ya see, stand on a ledge overlooking a canyon and the catchers stand on t'other side." Kell stops and takes a gulp of his ale and wipes foam from his beard, "Then the pitchers, they, take turns tossing a goblin's head over the canyon to the catchers. Whichever catcher, ya see, what catches the head gets a point for their team. It ain't easy to pitch or catch a head after it's been tossed around for a bit, it gets slimy and loose you know. Oh, and if both catchers miss, or the head don't make it over the gap, then nobody gets a point and you move on to the next head."

Sitting back Kell finishes with a grin, "Anywho, first team to 20 heads wins. Simple, see!"

"So, how do elves play catch?" Kell asks, "Do you toss the heads from tree to tree or some such like that?"

So it sounds like the North Road is our best bet.

We should provision up here in town for the rest of the day. Can we all be ready to leave tomorrow?

"Well, that sounds... interesting," replies Gallaine dubiously. She never could figure numbers beyond eleven herself, but these Dwarfs were rumoured to be obsessed with mathematics.

"Alas, the folk of Wildwood are not so inclined," she feigns a polite degree of disappointment, "They hunt and shoot for sport."

She drains her goblet of wine and agrees heartily with William's plan.

Flandil also voices his consent with Jariel's considered proposition ((North Road)). He memorises Sleep x2 and Charm Personx1.

Sitting at a nearby table, Kell overhears this and chuckles into his mug of ale.

"Me thinks some'un is still wet twixt their ears." he whispers quietly to the elves still at his table.

"Ick, that sounds so messy. No, for a ball we use sponges. We spend most of the time running the bases, but if you reach a base with your hair messy you're out."

Yhency memorizes sleep.
