App: 5'11", tan complexion, lean and slightly wolvish, with brown hair and beard, piercing grey-blue eyes. He has a canny look, no brutish barbarian. Kroth walks with a limp due to a slight twist in his pelvis & spine - a birth defect, though he prefers people think it an old battle-wound. It can be uncomfortable at times. Despite this he has quite a commanding presence and is a natural leader of men - and of dogs.
A tribesman of the Savvi people, Kroth is an experienced trainer of the war-dogs with which his people hunt reindeer across the cold northern wastes. He has recently come south with his dogs and his retainers to seek his fortune in warmer climes.
NB: Kroth recently lost his sword while crossing a river, first priority is to find a new one... Kroth's 5 retainers - since he's starting off cashless, he can't pay them, so they are off boozing in Muntburg and ignoring him. So he urgently needs to get cash to (1) buy a sword and (2) pay his men's wages to re-recruit them. So dire is his need for money he'll even consider a venture into the Dwimmermount...

Wulfgar the Clever 1st lvl Dwarf Fighting-Man (Neutral)
Also known as Wulfgar Flatface after his father took a warhammer to his face in a fit of rage over an incident of near fatal stupidity. His facial disfigurement, combined with gross stupidity, stubbornness, and various odious habits make him generally unlikable. Amongst his clan his stupidity is legendary in fact Wulfgar isn't even smart enough to realise his clan cognomen is derogatory. He is short and squat even by dwarf standards, has grey eyes, raven black hair and a greyish complexion.

Dean's character: * (I now have a copy of OD&D and Greyhawk, so I have adjusted my hit points accordingly. And lost my prayer of healing. )

Shaven with close-cropped hair, a habit from traveling in hot lands. A white pilgrim’s surcoat with a symbol of crossed palms on its breast, over beaten platemail.

Before you stands an unassuming young man, wearing a dark grey hooded robe of a monk or a pigrim. He is hooded. When he speaks, he does so in an obedient whine of one submissive to the Will of Our Lord Typhon. If he takes off his hood, the reason becomes apparent. Crushing warhammer blows to face do not high CHA score make. Dude's left side of the face is messed up, torn and caved in, a mess of tight white scar tissue. In his knapsack he carries a well worn Typhonian Bible, which he thumps all the time and from which he sermonized, guilting the good towns people around him into what food and shelter he needs, invoking the Crusades against Chaos whch have so disfigured him to eak out what he calls legitimate living. Unfortunately Liss is a slave to his passions and is firmly in the grip of the biological prerogative to procreate. Lacking wholesome good looks and pinchable rosy cheeks, Liss developed sharp wit and is skilled at pushing guilt and evoking pity from the fairer sex, relying on gold and coversation to get his way. And this is where his proclivities as a burglar and an advnturer come into play: He burglarizes the homes where he previously stayed to get the gold he needs, and he knows how to show the local wenches a good time with it. Recently he saw the sign from Typhon, met a good looking parson's daughter who is trying to save him, and so, he decided on the more honest and profitable means of taking gold as he decided to stay in town for a while...

Honest John Goblin Thief
STR 4 (-1 melee hit and damage) INT 10 WIS 12 CON 7 (-1 hp) DEX 15 (+1 missile hit) CHA 9
HP 4 AC 7
Leather Armor Light Crossbow 40 crossbow bolts Two daggers Spear Large Sack 2 Weeks of Standard Rations wineskin (wine mixed with boullion) 59 gp
Honest John wears a scarf tied over his head and the tops of his ears not because he is ashamed to be a goblin but because he has no wish to make you feel scared that he is a goblin. In fact, he is like an elf except that he is smaller and doesn't mind sharing food. If he were an elf, you would say his eyes were like rubies, his skin the color of honey-mead, that he had an aquiline nose and that his clothes recalled the varied hues of late autumn.
And instead he is a goblin and you can say he looks like a shaved rat with jaundice but do not say his clothes are soiled. They are stained. He washes them but they are just stained.
He is not really like an elf, he's more like a human. He has always lived with humans and tried to help them and he speaks like a human and the only reason his teeth are pointed is for eating the same kind of meats that humans eat: sheep and chicken and ducks and birds and cow beef and mouse beef and mixed beef. Deer running wild that no one owns. And boullion. Sometimes fish, saltfish and swampfish. Kidney, livers, and black kidney.
Mostly boullion. He takes a lot of boullion. Most of the stains is boullion.

Total Weight of equipment listed above: 490 (Qualifying for light foot movement, 12")
Character Description and short Background:
Kirsa is short and scrawny even for a goblin. She has stringy black hair and a pale green, pockmarked complexion. She looks much more like a human than most goblins, in terms of the shape of her face, which means that she is hideously ugly by goblin standards.
She grew up idolizing what she perceived as the superior organization of the lawful human societies; this probably sprang from the kindly words that a proselytizing priest of Typhon cast in her direction when she was an impressionable wee gobby knee-high to a kobold. Coupled with her ugly looks, her condescending attitude towards the squalor of the goblin warren made her a very unpopular adolescent girl and she had no suitors by the time that most of her age-mates had coupled and settled down to rear litters. She set off to Adamas to make her fortune as an architect (she was always fascinated by buildings and masonry) but soon found that she was even more of an outcast in human society.
Her grand dreams shattered, she turned to a life of begging (disguised as a crippled human child, complete with white pancake makeup and a bandaged head), stealing and cheating at dice and cards. She still has a deeply felt longing to be a part of a lawful society and if she was ever treated with respect, kindness and dignity she would gladly abandon her cheating ways even though the skills she learned on the streets will probably stay with her for the rest of her life.
Her time spent in the shadows and alleys of the human city taught her that the only people likely to give her the time of day were rough and tumble, adventuresome sorts. The upper crust of society turned their noses up at her, ignoring her even as they dropped a coin in her beggars cup. After scraping together a decent stash of money, she bought some gear and sought out the company of some adventurers. Kirsa wants above all else to earn fame through her heroic exploits; treasure is a secondary motivation, as she thinks that if she is seen as a famous hero than perhaps she will finally have a place in human society.

A quick note on Dex adjustments to AC: only fighting men get a Dex modifier to AC. As per the Greyhawk Supplement: "Fighters with a dexterity of greater than 14 can use their unusual manual dexterity to attempt to dodge or parry opponents' attacks. For every point over 14 they are able to reduce their opponents' chances of hitting them by 1"

Back Story: Not finding himself terribly successful as mercenary, Ursus the Weak came to Muntburg looking for an easy job of "drinking and gambling rather than holding the line against Chaos".
What he found instead was an atmosphere of alertness and even fear and an effort by the higher-ups to raise the level of preparedness among the garrison. Ursus, with his weakly frame, didn't make the cut and was rejected as a new recruit.
Short on cash, he signed up with Frère Reynauld, Bosco, et al. who were looking for fighting men and had lower standards than the Muntburg Garrison.

It really is interesting that in the original D&D worlds it's the folk with near crippling physical and/or mental drawbacks (Dex's of 7, Wisdoms and Cons of 6, etc.) who decide to head out into danger? Maybe we are just suicidal because of being weaklings/stumblebums/numbnuts while most townsfolk are usually straight 10's and fairly happy tilling the fields.

Well, rolling 3d6 straight down the line it is going to be pretty rare to not have a single attribute of 7 or lower. And OD&D is far more forgiving to low attributes, you don't get a penalty unless you have a REALLY low number. My 7 con and 7 str don't even carry any penalties (well, I guess if I end up getting petrified or resurrected my low con would come into play), and I can carry as much as an average person!
I do love the 5 str fighter above, that is bad ass and a very bold character choice. A toast to Ursus the Weak!

I know we are recreating a very old school experience here and that is cool. My character personality was fully fleshed out due to my guy's drawbacks (I think being a hopeless drunk is better than having anemia or advanced cancer, which were a couple of ideas I originally had to explain my 6 Con).
I don't believe in Supermen in my own 1st ed. games, but I'm sure that most old schoolers like me made almost immediate changes in the dice rolling even as kids - mainly putting the rolls on whatever stats you want (so the newcomer who envisions running a decently intelligent MU doesn't have to just run a fighter cause that is the stat that got the good roll). And it's suprising how many crappy rolls can still be had by roll 4 pick best 3.
But the deeply old school way we are doing it here has been pretty hilarious so far.
