"What do you think we should do, then? I'm not going to pound on their holes to draw them out!" Desmond hisses in response.
Realizing his sling is probably not as useful at this point, Desmond stows it away in a pocket and sheathes his dagger, to draw his short sword and brace his shield.
"No idea," Ulric answers gruffly. "Considering how much is coating the walls I certainly hope not. Since nothing is currently attacking us I suggest we make use of the time and check these crates and this hole. Either that or we could just stand here waiting for something to attack."

Dorgan's the dwarf for the job. "All righty then. Let's see what we can see."
Dorgan will slowly move up until he's next to the crates. He'll take a close look to make sure there's no evidence that these are now nests for beasties or something similar.
Assuming he sees nothing bad and nothing jumps on him, he'll try to pry one of the crates open.

"Carefully, my friend," Josiane whispers.
She moves up to guard Dorgan, watching for any sign of threat from walls or ceiling, trusting to the dwarf's canny senses to alert him to any trap warding the crates themselves.

The coverage of the dried phlegm on the walls is far from total... it might be nearer one fifth part of the total wall surface, concentrated around the various cracks and burrows.
Dieter moves cautiously into the cellar to keep a watchful eye of the wide, dark pit, while Highbough tests the inflammability of the phlegm. It hisses and sputters above his flame, but steams and melts rather than catching fire.
From his nearer position, Dieter can now see there is a rickety looking wooden ladder affixed to the near-side of the circular pit wall by which one could descend into the darkness. To his left -- previous concealed behind a pile of earth (and still half buried in it) -- there is a waist-high pedestal standing near the rim of the pit.

Meanwhile, Dorgan tries to open one of the crates. The timber lids don't dislodge easily, even after clearing off all the loose earth. It seems to be nailed down. A crowbar, or similar, would be the ideal tool to lever the lid off the crate...

Lacking a crowbar, Dorgan will hook his axe on his belt, unsheath his letter-opener, and see if he can pop the lid off with that.

Dorgan sets to work on the lid with Dwarfish determination [1d6=3] but try as he might, he cannot pry the lid open with his letter-opener. The little dagger just doesn't have the necessary leverage to work the timbers free.
