Desmond moves to the door to the left of the workbench.

Desmond decides there is nothing unusual about the door, so he and Mondes both remove their helms and listen at the door after examining it to see if they notice anything unusual about it.

Desmond and Mondes both have a good long listen... [1d6], but despite them both having Hobbit sharp hearing, neither of them can hear anything beyond the door over the other one's breathing.

Dorgan soon figures out that the wooden platform is "floating" in a perfectly hewn gap in the stone dais, which itself is raised about 6in about the floor proper. Clearly it is supported on some column or pillar from below, and is apparently designed to be raised up to the cellar, and quite possible the garden as well. Whether it can be lowered further cannot be discerned immediately -- the fit is too snug. At least, not without lifting a couple of the boards of the platform to see what lies below...

Dieter grudgingly allows Josiane to try her mumbo jumbo prayers, and is shocked when a shiver of great relief runs through him, and further; when it subsides he is feeling remarkably refreshed! Perhaps there is something to this religion "thing" after all?

Dieter now has 11/17 hit points.

Desmond and Mondes put their helms back on.

When it looks like Ulric is done examining the second workbench, and anyone else nearby is ready (and ONLY when everyone else is ready), Desmond will open the door to the left of the workbench.

Ulric examines the metal working tools on the work bench to see if any are unusual or particularly valuable.

Once he has finished, Ulric moves over where Desmond/Mondes are investigating the door. Ulric positions himself about 10' behind the halfling facing the door but not directly in front of it (a few feet to the left) just in case there is a trap.

Ulric readies his mind to fill the area beyond the door with flame should anything leap out.

Fully understandable, Mondes being a mouth-breather and all that...

Dorgan is standing guard with Olaf and is more concerned about the centipede sneaking up (or down) on him than what's going on at the door with Ulric and Des.

Highbough lends light and spear to the door-opening procedure.

It is much like a simth's workshop. There are hammers, anvils, tongs, and plyers and all the implements and materials of metal work lying about. At one end of the bench is a great wide brazier full of long dead coals, a dry water bath, and a brick furnace oven. Both the brazier and the furnace have wide copper chimney pips that runs up to the ceiling, along the wall for some way, and then vanish into the overhead stone -- presumably to link into the manse's central chimney.

It is quite the little workshop down here.

When everyone is ready, Desmond tries the door...

Rattle, rattle.

It is held fast.

"Bah, I dont have time for this", pipes Gustave, "its almost morning tea", and puts his mailed boot through the door.

Josiane flinches at Gustave's impetuosity, raises her shield and gets a good grip on her sword...

[1d6=6!]

Gustave's boot smashes the lock and the door slams open with a clatter!

Then there is a moment of baited silence before everyone breathes a sigh of relief. There is no fire breathing dragon in the passage beyond. Instead, there is an empty passage way, in which an intersection can just barely been seen some 30ft ahead...

What now?

"Here, kitty kitty," mutters Highbough. He illuminates the passage with his lantern, not stepping foot past the threshold for fear of triggering some trap.
