Guntrum pads along with Ulric, silently hoping he gets some chance at treasure soon so he could afford to bring a torch for the next expedition. "Ser Gustave is right," he adds glumly. "We don't want to be surprised gathering treasure as our friends likely were in the crypt."

Desmond/Mondes, Ulric and Guntrum explore the extent of the basement while Highbough examines the journal and Josiane sees to the wounds of Gustave and Dieter.

Nobody is specifically on watch duty...

Desmond/Mondes, Ulric and Guntrum explore the basement, and are startled when they see another giant figure looming up over them in the dark, before they realise that it is simply an in-construction, 10ft tall model. This one is a sinister looking framework of metal rods welded together -- an incomplete articulated metal skeleton (not too dissimilar to a medieval terminator!).

This shock aside, the basement vault turns out to be approximately twice as large as the ring of lantern light. There is another workbench along the rear wall as well as stocks of old timber and metal.

There are two closed doors, one at either end of the back wall.

Everything is still and quiet, other than the company themselves...

Josiane assists Gustave and Dieter to remove buckled pieces of armor, to wash and bind cuts and bruises, and to refit plate and mail. The pair of fighting men sluice the sweat from their necks and faces and take a refreshing draft from their water skins. Combat is hot work.

Hit points are recovered; [1d6; Dieter=1, Gustave=4]

Dieter now has 6/17 hp.
Gustave now has 12/14 hp.

Dieter is still feeling a bit beaten up.

While the others are busy Highbough examine the journal. It is a scruffy old leather bound thing full of loose and dog-eared leaves -- a real working ledger.

He flicks to the back and sees no mention of doom. The entries are not regularly dated, though it doesn't take the Elf long to discern that somebody has been experimenting with the various methods of constructing great automata. Many such attempts of varying sorts are recorded, with the successes and failures outlined. A few dates appear hear and there, and it appears that much of this work has been done only a year or two ago.

The identity of the author remains a secret.

"Are we pressing on, or calling it a day?" says Highbough. "If we're turning back then maybe we should board up these two doors with some of this lumber."

Before they leave, Dorgan would like to take a closer look at the framework. Does it appear to be hand-worked or was magic involved? Does it bear any signs of Dwarfish workmanship?

Gustave stands refreshed, and completes the labour of refitting his armour.

"My thanks, my dear", he says, tipping his brow to Josianne, "...though some of us appear less rewarded from the Lady's ministrations", he adds raising a brow at Dieters still slumped form and grinning. "Perhaps our man Dieter has an eye on replacing Olaf in the dutiful care of the Sisters, ha ha!", he says, slapping the big man on the back.

"Now, what intelligence has your puissant efforts garnered gentlemen?" he enquires, joining Ulric and company deeper in the chamber.

"Two doors over here," Ulric says to Gustave, "along with a work in progress."

"I'd rather check what is behind these doors before we leave. We are here after all. If they simply lead to long halls then we can board them up."

Ulric moves to investigate the other workbench.

Olaf is!

The young warrior is standing on the platform trying to watch all directions at once.

Very well, Olaf stands watch over all this activity...

The intimidating steel skeleton looks to be hand made -- almost certainly by the array of metalworking tools on the rear work bench. But unless Dorgan is mightily mistook, none of this is Dwarf craft. Some of the welds are too rough, and the general symmetry of it is too imprecise. No Dwarf could rest with that!

Desmond moves to the door to the left of the workbench.

He and Mondes both remove their helms and listen at the door after examining it to see if they notice anything unusual about it.

After checking out the skeletal golem, Dorgan will join Olaf on watch, although he'll stay off the platform.

The dwarf will place the Marrowstone on the ground at his feet and draw Mads' Cold Iron Axe again, just in case battle need be joined quickly.

Actually, before he turns his full attention to guard duty, he'll look around the platform to see if there's any indication there's another level below the one they currently stand upon. Could the platform descend even deeper?

"A moment, Lord Dieter," says Josiane, still concerned by the extent of the Angry One's injuries; "Let us see if the blessings of the White Lady may be called upon..."

She washes Dieter's wounds and attempts to call forth the power of The Supplication of Medicant Requite ...
