Now that the matter has been settled, I thought the rest of you might like to know (purely out of character) what went on in the third vault. If so read on...

To recap, it all began not long ago with this...

Pelenwin (presently on but 1 hit point) and Wibert both fall to their knees before separate coffers of coin and start emptying the content into their treasure gatherer's sacks excitedly.

Wibert is still imagining all the exquisite sweets and pastries he will be able to afford when there comes a sudden, loud grinding of stone. Both of them look up just in time to see a great stone door drop into place, sealing them in with a resounding thud. They are trapped!

"Whooooo ailsssss mhhyyyy peeeacessss?" comes a terrible whisper like cold ashes crumbling into a forlorn autumn breeze.

The pair of them are afraid.

Pelenwin and Wibert both drop their treasure sacks and jump up with fright!

Pelenwin laments his foolishness and Wibert scrambles for his dagger and torch, casting its light this way and that in search of some enemy, and immediately reveals a terribly lean, tall figure looming toward them from the inky shadows of the vault. Its flesh is awfully white, and its black robes are tattered and wasted, and it seems to glide steadily rather than walk. It seems unarmed, other than a long, curved knife at its belt, but its brings a wave of fierce chill with it, and its fingers are dire black talons. It is not 40ft away and coming with intent!

"Youuuu willll sleeeeeeep noooowwww forrrrevvveeeerrrrrrrrrrr," it rasps.

Melee will commence next round. What to do?

Wilbert the shadow keeps to the shadows with magical dagger and short sword in hand. His skill that got him his name will be surely tested this day. >:(

OOC: Previous post was to put the torch down fast and try to stand it up and dart and hide in the shadows.

Wibert will sneak quickly in the shadows to get a back stab with his magically dagger behind this fiend. It may be our best hope to fall this enemy.
{{Back up plan: If he is spotted he will drop the short sword and grap a hand full of dust from the floor and through it into the fiends face (if no dust on the floor Wibert will use a throwing dagger or two from his dagger belt - keeping the magically dagger in his other hand), hoping he will get behind the fiend to back stab before he can react}}.

Wibert is not much for praying but if he makes it out of here his going to give it a try... here goes everything!

Seeing as the pair of you were surprised, there was little enough time for Wibert to simply drop the torch, whip out sword and dagger, and attempt to hide in shadows last round.

[1d6=3] Wibert isn't sure whether the monster has seen him or not as he back-peddles away from his guttering torch and into the shadows behind Pelenwin who does not retreat an inch, but instead bows his head and begins to pray as the fiend shrieks and descends upon him in an icy rush...

[Initiative shall be rolled; and Pelenwin's fate does hang by a thread! 1d6; Pelenwin=1, Foe=2! Doh!]

Alas the ghastly aberration is upon the fearless templar before he completes the opening phrase of his soliloquy [1d20 (weighty roll this one)=19 Noooooo!] and its fearsome black talons puncture his neck and throat, choking off any prayer that he might have uttered before ever it passes his lips. Pelenwin the Bold writhes and shudders awfully in its grip of ice as his eyes wither to blackness and his broken flesh goes grey as it is drained utterly of all warmth.

"Noooowww yooouuu diieeeeee!" hisses the terrifying monster, and woe! Pelenwin knows no more...

The terror shakes the broken knight's body by its neck a moment longer, then abruptly discards it, dashing it to the ground with aclattered of mail and gear, then turns about this way and that, apparently regarding the sarcophagi in the room.

[Wibert can back stab if he wishes... ]

The hidden halfling is braver by far than he is wise, and seeing Pelenwin ended, he leaps from the shadow with a furious cry and plunges the gleaming Blade of Goch Gwyddyl into its back [1d20=19] and he strikes true!

The elvish steel plunges fully to the hilt into the small of its back [2dd=2,4] for 8 hit points causing it to squeal most terrifyingly as it spins about to lock its soul-freezing gaze upon Wibert.

"Fooohhll!" it hisses, drawing the loathsome ice-blue blade from its belt, then lunges to the attack.

What now, master Hobbit?

Wibert will dart away and try to keep his distance and use his throwing daggers (x4) from his dagger belt, one at at time avoiding getting close enough to be bitten. If Wibert is forced to hand to hand combat he will fight with magic dagger and short sword and try to keep his back to the passageway so he can run if he needs to escape.

"Time to die, run now or burn in hell!", commands Wibert with what he hopes is not his last words. He hopes beyond all else he can be home to cook a meal this night for his friends and sleep safely in his bed once more ...

Alas, but the fearsome thing has the tall stride of a Man, and its purpose is bent upon Wibert. There is no hope the short-legged Halfling will outpace it and attack in a round. It is lethal combat then.

No sooner has Wibert whisked out his short-sword than the terror is diving at him with a chilling squeal... [initiative is rolled 1d6; Wibert=2+1, Foe=4] ...and its fell attack comes viper quick [1d20=15] and deadly accurate!

The ice-blue blade punctures Wibert in a flash -- it is sinuous and deathly chill -- and he swoons like a fish in air as pain and cold rushes fills him, numbing his left arm and side, as his strength wanes alarmingly [Woe, Wibert is reduced to a 1st level thief with 4 hit points].

Our valiant burglar fights back even as he staggers -- it is all he can do in such dire circumstances [1d20=10], but his strength is gone to water and his flashing blades catch only frigid air... is this the end for Wibert the Shadow? Why oh why didn't he stay hidden?

Quote:

To Wibert it feels like hours have passed went in fact it has been seconds, his friend-in-arms Pelenwin lies on the ground. A vampire creature had attacking him. Keeping to the shadows may been his first best option to survive and Wibert determines to try again to avoid death. "If I die now how can be face his family with the news...", thinks Wibert.

Wibert will drop the short sword (unless he has time to throw it at the attacker to gain time) and grap the torch and poke/throw it into the vampires eyes. In that split second he will yell out "run" to confuse, and dart into the shadows and hide as he has never hid before. For Wibert's name is The Shadow and for a good reason.

Then if all else fails and Wibert is discovered again in the shadows with no where else to hide in shadows, Wibert will attack and thrust his magical dagger into the heart of the vampire like a stake in hopes of slaying the evil beast like in stories of old, or die trying.

Wibert acts quickly this plan, and prays to Pelenwin's god for blessing if he is listening ....

[The above is quite enough for one round; the rest will have to wait for the next.

The referee deems that dazzling the thing's eyes with the torch and instantly thereafter attempting to hide in shadows is a spectacularly daring plan, worthy of a "long shot". As Wibert is Wibert the Shadow I'll allow him a 2 chance in 6 to apparently vanish mid melee! Of course, it will help if he wins the initiative too...]

Wibert swoops toward the guttering torch even as initiative is rolled [1d6; Wibert=5+1, enemy=1] and is he ever fast?! With frost cracking off his wounded shoulder Wibert has the torch in a flash and flicks it up toward the ghastly dead eyes of the icy fiend as it leans down to catch him in its dread claws and... [1d6=2 DOOOWWWWHHHH! ] he skittles between its withered stick legs into the darkness behind it, but it isn't fooled and turns light lightning slashing its bone sword after the nimble Halfling [1d20=7] cutting the air not half an inch over Wibert's head as he tumbles into a poised position facing the wroth enemy.

Wibert survives another round!

What next?
