Thank you for the recommendations. I have a copy of Labyrinth Lord and the Moldvay Basic set and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them. I have never played any games with either one of them because I have never had anyone who wanted to play. I have tried to find a white box set of S&W but they are fetching high prices now a days.

You can still get the TPB of S&W Whitebox from Lulu. $9.95.

I want the actual white box set they released about a year back. I guess I will have to wait until they make a third printing.

Brave Halfling is no longer publishing S&W Whitebox. They are publishing their own 0E clone - Delving Deeper. I think you can still get in on the pre-order for the boxed set, if you so desire.

I know of no plans by Mythmere Games, to re-publish S&W WB in an actual boxed set.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely be pre-ordering it sometime soon.

Hi! I am a 42 year old D&D DM who has ran every single edition of D&D up to and including 4E. I'll spare you the 4E ranting but I do like 4E. Just not enough to keep running it.

For me simple is better and CHEAP AND SIMPLE beats everything.

See last year my wife added up we spent $1,000 on RPG's. Now that includes computer games and even a MMO but the majority of the cash went into tabletop.

My new years resolution is to spend not one penny on rpg's. I also made computer games part of that package in order to stick it to the wife ;D for finding and making a big deal out of the price of our game habits.

So this year I decided to get back to the Original game. How we do that I'm still investigating.

OD&D is a mess of goodness. I might decide to go with S&W Whitebox for a free way to get everyone the rules etc.

The compiled Brown book pdf was recommended so I will take a look at that next but I'm leery about its legality. Not that I'm overly concerned about that but on principle, I don't like to even have stolen material at my gaming table. I'm not saying that its stolen mind you! Just that I dunno about it yet.

I plan on running some sort of OD&D game soon. I have to break my players in a little to get to where I want to go.

From 4E to AD&D is a big enough shock for the moment but I am already laying groundwork for the move to OD&D.

Welcome aboard!

This is certainly the Golden Age of retroclones--you can pretty much legally play whatever ruleset you used to love for free.

You might also want to check out Labyrinth Lord (clone of Moldvay Basic) and OSRIC (clone and/or rules compilation of 1e AD&D). Or, if you're interested in how Arneson might've developed things on his own, you could take a look at Dragons at Dawn (not free, though not expensive...)

Hello, one and all! Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I started with Holmes, then supplemented with the OD&D supplements and, as they were released, the AD&D manuals. I dabbled a bit in the products released for the Moldvay/Cook line as well. I used to always be puzzled by complaints that AD&D was too complicated until, thanks to the OSR and boards like this, I came to see that I was rather playing something like late OD&D using the AD&D manuals as source books and rules options!

Anyway, thanks to everyone here for keeping the flame burning!

Welcome!

Yeah, we never came close to using all the rules in AD&D at one time, either. We tried different bits at different times. I, for one, am still a big fan of the grappling rules... :)

Hello!

I am a 41 year old player/DM currently in Cleveland, Ohio.

My first RPG was the Moldvay Basic set. I can't say why I picked it up other than the cover was interesting. I didn't get to do much with it (lack of players/DM), but reread it from time to time and soloed a few dungeons. In middle school a friend introduced me to AD&D - but his DM wasn't very good and I found the rules intimidating.

I never quite gave up though and subscribed to both Dragon and Polyhedron (RPGA). I made the jump to AD&D 2, and that's probably the system I know best. Somewhere around there I drifted to Mentzer for ideas and appreciated the relative simplicity.

In time I played 3.0 and 3.5 (never 4.0), but I'd moved and lost my gaming group.

Over the last two months I began looking at pretty much any OSR clone I could find looking to get back to D&D's roots and, once I was comfortable again, try to find/create a game. Greyelf's S&S gets a lot of credit here - his attempt to merge OD&D with Chainmail really caught my attention. I wanted to get back to the source material to see where he was coming from, so I bought the LBBs, Supps I-III, and Chainmail as well as Holmes (which I took to be the first major organization effort).

First, it's nice to see where the rules I found strange at the time - 2d6 morale/reactions in Basic D&D, resting 1 turn in 6, the weapon vs. armor chart in AD&D 1st - came from.

Second, I liked that what 3.0/3.5 needed skill checks and feats to accomplish, OD&D encouraged and all-but-demanded that you make up as you go.

Third and perhaps most importantly, in pretty much any version I played or DMed I noticed and worried about escalating power and game balance (needing +x weapons to thrive, wandering around with 100+ hp, etc.) It was liberating to see that the power curve I worried about wasn't part of the original design, that I could pinpoint where it started to slip ... and that meant I could stop it from happening.

So - hello! I'm still very new to OD&D and figuring out where all the little bits fit together, but I plan to stay awhile. I don't think I could go back anymore.

Catknight, welcome!

You and I are the same age and started with the same set, oh Moldvay Brother! :)

And yeah, looking back through the history and how the rules have developed can indeed be a liberating experience...

I'm new to this site as I was looking for info about the original books for which I still have.

I don't have the spells book but have all the other original books, chainmail and the box it came in. I haven't dug them up in a long while but I know I have the blackmore mod and two of the Arduin Grimore if not all three.

Does anyone know if there is any legal issue with me making pdf copies of them so I can make them available to those who want them?

Welcome! Legal issues, yes, likely if WoTC decides to enforce it's IP rights to something it once made available in PDF, but then decided to no longer make available. Which all of us here think is an utter shame. Don't need to go scanning PDF's though, but thanks for the kindly offer! :-)

Hi, im a high school student from Norman Oklahoma. I got my start in gaming a few years ago with D&D 4th edition. I am usually a DM and have run games of 4e, 2e, Call of Cthulhu, and od&d. I tend to perfer the more rules light and open world/sandbox approach to gaming, which is why I was originally drawn to od&d and to this site.
