 Essential Pegana?
« Thread Started on Mar 22, 2012, 11:49am »

Introducing myself to Dunsany, much belatedly. Recently finished The Gods of Pegana, currently reading Time and the Gods. Also have The Book of Wonder available. Dunsany aficionados, what else do I need?

As an aside, the Kindle is great for this. It's all free, as is Hodgson, Lovecraft, A Voyage to Arcturus, The King in Yellow, and much more. Never would have gotten to Dunsany and those latter two books without it and now I know where to spend money to expand my real book collection. I've got the mid-range model, the Kindle Touch and it's awesome. Very helpful for lazy semi-illiterates like myself when reading old books with big words - just touch the word and the built in dictionary tells you what it means.

My Dunsany collection consists of the following:

The Gods of Pegana
Time and the Gods
A Dreamer's Tales
Tales of Three Hemispheres
The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories
The Book of Wonder
Tales of Wonder
The Food of Death: Fifty-One Tales
The King of Elfland's Daughter (many years since I read this one)
The Charwoman's Shadow (which I've not yet read)

I consider all of the above (save the last two, which I can't comment on) to be uneven: Some of the tales are wonderous, while some are mediocre. All of the above are worth getting. My favorite Dunsany tale is "The Fall of Babbulkund" (collected in The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories). I'd give a lot to be able to write stories like that one.

I think Fifty-One Tales and The Book of Wonder are his best. I am particularly fond of the one page stories - Charon and Death and the Orange.

Liked the fantastical stories in 51 a lot, less the modern-day ones.

Kent and Geoff, do any of your editions have maps in them? I'm coming up empty on the Internet...

I'd SWEAR I've seen maps, but didn't have any luck searching either.

However, here are some gorgeous Sidney Sime illustrations, many of which are from Dunsany stories.

'The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth' from Sword of Welleran is a real ripper. Liked it better than the title track. 'The Highwaymen' is another favorite.

I just buy up all of the Dunsany I can. His Jorkens tales are fun as well. I never get tired of reading and re-reading his tales. The Fortress Unvanquishable is, arguably, the first S&S tale written and a great read. Idle Days on the Yann and linked tales are favorites too.

If you aren't a complete toadlicker like me you could buy the Chaosium Complete Pegana for about $15. I bought a copy from some online bookseller for $45. :( But I made up for it over the years by buying up ALL of the Lord Dunsany books I can find at reasonable prices. At least in my mind.
