The Darkness Beneath - Thread 3
« Thread Started on Aug 26, 2008, 2:38pm »

[Bumped.]

Here's the list of who's doing/done what:

Level 1 - The Upper Caves - Hackman
Level 2 - Warrens of the Troglodytes - Calithena
Level 3 - Spawning Grounds of the Crab-Men - Sham
Level 4 - A Mysterious Crystal Hemisphere - James M.
Level 5 - The Lower Caves - Sham
Level 6 - The Fane of Salicia - Lee Barber
Level 7 - The Palace of Eternal Illusion - HELP NEEDED
Level 8 - The Deep Caves - Sham
Level 9 - The Citadel of the Dark Trolls - (Busman?)
Level 10 - The Hall of Mirrors - Calithena
Level 11 - Fungus Forest and Mold Falls - (Makofan?)
Level 12 - Blasphemous Shrine of the Tentacled God - (Ant?) HELP NEEDED
Level 13 - The Caverns of Slime - (Makofan?)
Level 14 - The City of the Ancients - HELP NEEDED
Level 15 - Tomb of the Black Lord of Nothingness - ? (but if it's not me I have some stuff I want you to include)

If you no longer have the energy for something you're slated for, that's cool, just let me know and someone else can take your place. If you want to chat/update on what's going on here, please do! I suppose the one that we need a volunteer for soonest is level 6; a fun level but you have to be able to do PG-13 priestesses and monsters of the goddess of lust, so that requires a certain restraint.

Let us know how it's going!

Changes: Sorry, had Makofan down for 13 instead of 11, fixed that. Also added level titles.

Wasn't Makofan working on Level 11, with lots of input from the boards? See thread: http://odd74.proboards76.com/index.cgi?board=fanzine&action=display&thread=947

EDIT: Could you update your post with the names of the levels Cal? There's a hand-drawn map numbered differently than your original post.

I will start on 15, a good high level map sounds like something fun to start on.

I'm still working on the Trolls, but my time has dropped to near zero right now, lots of stuff going on in my life. I would love to continue working on this, but realistically it's going to be a while before I can work reasonably on it again(2-3 months from now).

If someone wants to take it, I will understand; if it can lay fallow for a while, that would be great.

Thanks,
Chris

Cool, Stormbringer. 13 is a good one too for high-level action, with slime demons and the line.

Busman, we're not going to be publishing level 9 realistically for quite a while, you can hang on to it for now. I had the sense that you had a cool vision and I'd like to give you a chance to get back to that.

Speaking of The Darkness Beneath, I've sent in and had approved the Intro and Background for the Lower Caves (level 5) to Calithena.

I'll be moving it forward rather quickly soon, despite the three business trips I have over the next five weeks. Ugh.

Just thought I'd let ya know that I am looking forward to submitting another level of TDB to FO!

As soon as that one's done I'll probably claim another (just a warning...I don't wanna be a level hog or anything, but this list has been here for a while now).

Sham, you can write as much as you want. Others are welcome too, but you've proven your mettle with your help on 1 and 2 and your awesome work on 3.

Just keep churning through. I've got to do more myself - I'm going to put 2 up here to motivate me to finish it as soon as I get FO! 3 laid out.

TDB: Lower Caves (Level 5) is turning out to be a design challenge for me. A megadungeon level with a PC friendly inn and tavern? How to make it work? How to make it interesting?

I considered two angles, first that the inn is simply a smallish area/safe house with a flamboyant proprietor, more or less a large room on the map; OR the second idea that the inn is a sprawling chunk of the map, with detailed rooms, guests and staff.

I took the second angle and am running with that. My issue is that it takes up half of the map, and detailing the place and its NPC's will take up a sizable portion of the adventure.

It's basically an underground inn for adventurers, surrounded by factions of an ancient, hibernating fae race, and their sleeping, imprisoned corrupt Queen. I think it will be an interesting level, but I'm concerned about its ultimate success in providing a playable 'dungeon' atmosphere.

I guess what I'm saying is that Level 5 is somewhat unorthodox, so wish me luck!

Anyone else have Darkness Beneath tidbits to update on as the project continues to unfold?

Hi Zulg,

We're at a minimum of 6 months until we need your level, so if you wanted to do it, you probably could. Either way best of luck with everything! You could make me happy by finishing either this or battle robots, though.

Should be. But no need on my end to plan so far out, just start when the mood and time strike you. I'll bug you if I need you to write or pass at some point along the way.

Slightly OT, but could these mega-dungeon threads be stickied? As a reader that missed some of the starting discussion, I'm having trouble following the project. Having all the topics bumped to page 1 would help.

What the heck is a "Fane" anyway ???

A fane is a temple or shrine; the word usually implies some sort of heathen as opposed to One True Church

I've asked calithena about developing level 6. Since the Fane isn't a stockpile of monsters for brawling, I'm thinking that there is "traffic" between levels here. Adventurers could discover naive human(oids) lured to the Fane, or evil beings in the midst of debauched activity with the dichotomous maidens. In short, I'd like to weave some inter-dungeon secrets for this level...ones worth much to those aiming to delve further.

I also promise at least one or two jaw-dropping illustrations ;)
