Well, the answer to both questions is mixed. For the first one, Phil made a number of changes, and it appears that Gary and/or other people at TSR re-arranged the text to more closely conform to the structure of Original D&D. As for the second question, Phil was pleased with the TSR version, but I have no idea if whether or not he thought of it as an "improvement" - I think he was just happy to see it in print.

That pre-TSR text really piqued my curiousity and I'm now embarking on a quest to buy up and download select PDFs from the mental world of EPT. I posted some thoughts here: http://adventuresandshopping.blogspot.co....inal-draft.html I'm really grateful to the publishers for making all of thhe older material available, since buying that box set is too rare an opportunity or way out of my price range.

I bought this up when I read about it on the Hill Canton's blog. It is an interesting document, and I'm glad I purchased it. I like to compare EPT to it especially when I'm not exactly sure about a rule. The history of the game was a big buying point for me.

I haven't, but I have thought that would be interesting and have done some comparisons. There are notable differences here and there. The treasure tables come to mind IIRC.

I've been comparing the rules portions of the '74 and '75 versions. It looks like the changes were mainly additions, often without concern for making them match. For example, the original had the level-vs-HD damage chart while the published one adds the variable weapon damage without explaining exactly how the two work together. Same with the addition of the "reaction time" initiative roll. The new section implies that only surviving characters can attack whereas the original rules that allow for a "dying blow" remain.
Unfortunately, doing a comprehensive comparison is too low on my gaming priority.
