Looking over the combat matrix I was thinking it could be used for more than just combat. Why not a universal resolution table?
So for example in the new supplement with the opposed characters arm wrestling you have
town bully - Strength 9 + 2 Ringkunst bonus for 11 total vs Spell caster – Strength 6 using the rule as suggested the bully wins automatically because of his difference, but if you just used them as opposed checks cross referencing the str of 6 vs the total of 11 we end up with a roll needed of 3 or less.
So you could apply this to other things. On page 38 you have the door that's stuck:
Nosenrald – Strength 8 vs door Strength 7 that leaves 6 or less. Using this it seems you can just assign any task a difficulty level and use this table to resolve it.
Thoughts? seem like a workable idea? any holes I may not be seeing?

Huh! that sounds like a terrific idea! Definetly worth testing out.

I was thinking of using it similarly but as a more general skill table (replacing some of the rolls vs ability scores and the thief's percentages). For example, a 4th level thief trying to open a "level 1" lock: 7 or less. Likewise the same 4th level thief sneaking past a 2nd level guard: 6 or less. Etc.
Characters would have a "skill value" equal to their level for their class functions or half their level if they aren't skilled in that area (a fighter trying to sneak for example).

Nice idea too. That's not unlike the Assasins table that Tim Kask created in Supplement II Blackmoor. We thought for a while that it might be Arneson's secret combat table utill we learned Tim had made it.
