BALROGS: A Balrog is truly a terrible opponent. Balrogs cannot be killed by normal missile fire or in normal combat. It inflicts casualties in normal combat as if it were two Heavy Horse. In addition, the Balrog can immolate any normal figure it touches during its move or melee. They operate equally well in darkness or in light. They can fly 15" per turn, and remain airborne for three turns.

I'm sure I can't find Balrogs in the PDF of the 3rd edition, 7th printing.

What edition do you have, 18Spears, or, if you also have 3rd edition, what page are they on?

I'm wondering whether they were removed as part of that Tolkien copyright violation thing.

No doubt.

For completeness, here are the OD&D stats:

Balrog

Move: 60 feet/turn, 150 feet flying
Treasure Type: F
Alignment: chaotic evil
Hit Dice: 10
Attacks: 2
Armor Class: 2
Damage: see below

A Balrog is a highly intelligent and truly terrible opponent with a magical nature. Balrogs cannot be killed by normal missile fire or melee weapons and there is a high probability that spells will not work against them (75%). They operate equally well in darkness or light and can remain airborne for three turns. In combat a Balrog will normally attack with a +1 magical sword, however, if it immolates (any score of 7 or better on two 6-sided dice, Dungeon Master to check each round) it also attacks with its whip. If the whip hits, the Balrog drags the opponent against its flaming body, doing 3d6 points of damage. In this manner a Balrog can fight two opponents at the same time.

Balrogs are listed in the Table of Contents on the same line as "Giants, Ents, Dragons".

They are listed on the first page of the Fantasy Supplement portion of the rules (p. 28) on the same line as "Ogres, Trolls".

They are in the listing at the top of page 30, a continuance of the "Elves (and Faeries) versus ..." listing.

Page 31, they appears in a listing for resolution of wizard missile attacks; below the wraith and above the giant.

The are on page 34 twice. The first time describing their ability to attack "true trolls" in the troll description. The second is the actual Balrog entry I quoted in the previous post.

Page 35 they appear twice, in the "ent" description and the "dragon" description.

Page 36 they appear in the "fire elemental" description.

Page 39 they appear in a listing for troop damage in sieges (4 points, btw). They also appear in the "Chaos" column for alignment on the same page (below "true troll" and above "giants").

Page 43 they are listed in Appendix D.

Page 44 they are listed in Appendix E.

Oh, and I also have a 3rd edition but I don't know the printing. Check your PMs for a description of the book, perhaps you can tell from the particulars.

Thanks for the very detailed replies! :)

I'm very new to this forum, so I'll probably ask questions that have already been discussed by everyone. Someone should start a wiki which contains the sum total of the forum's knowledge.

While we're on the subject, what exactly does 'immolate' mean? If it's like dragon breath, why does a Balrog even need melee stats?

Any fool of a DM can kill his players, it's as easy as "Rocks fall, everybody dies". The Art lies in giving them the opportunity to kill themselves, in as entertaining a manner as possible.

Immolate: to kill or destroy by fire.

It isn't the same as dragon breath because it can only burn one target. Still, the balrog is nasty in D&D because its one of the few monsters that can fight more than one opponent at a time.

What are the values for the Balrog on the CHAINMAIL Fantasy Combat Table?

I meant the "fantasy creatures vs fantasy creatures" Fantasy Combat Table. You know, what does a dragon need to kill a Balrog, etc. Appendix E in 3rd Ed.
