"More of the restless dead maybe," Nestor comments after hearing the sharp clank of metal on metal.
"For ruins these structures seem rather intact...sealed doors and boarded up windows. I'm not sure the dead would keep such a tidy abode. Perhaps Uruks? I think we should find out. In any event this farmhouse would make an excellent place to hole up. It's not too far into the city and it looks quite formidable. We just need to take it from whatever is inside."
Nestor retrieves his bow and quiver of arrows from his horse and carefully nocks an arrow in preparation for whatever will follow.

Jochi joins Iseul in examining whether it'd be possible to climb up to the boarded-up windows in the barn - perhaps if we both stand on Kamal's back, and then Jochi makes a hoist with his hands to help lift Iseul up?
Once up there, is there a place to stand that'd give sufficient leverage to pry up some of the boards and get a look inside? And does anyone have a crowbar?

Armand does not see any other tracks than your own.
The walls of the barn are built from large, rough boulders, that Iseul could probably climb fairly easily. Digging the doors clear would probably take a few hours. The silo is approximately three times the height of the barn and the distance between them is several hundred feet.
Karl identifies the birds as a type of vultures. Usually they are of no danger but to the dead.
Jochi's plan could probably work, but as he studies the wood of the shutters he notices something peculiar. A closer investigation confirms that the wood in the doors and shutters seems to have turned to stone, or more precisely, dark crystal. The same is true for the doors of the silo.

Karl points at the vultures and says, "Carrion birds. For so many to be here might mean something has died recently, yet...", he looks around, "....no tracks lead to this place, so perhaps not."

Karl says, "Shall we try the tower first? From its top we could scout the region and afterward make some plans."

Jacques points up towards the silo:
"The silo is three times the height of the barn. Maybe if Iseul climbs the barn and secures a rope with my hammer and spikes there may be a way into the barn from above. Then we could get an archer up there to cover us. Also, Iseul may get a better view of the top of the silo."

OOC: I'm assuming the barn has a flat roof ?
"I am game to try, if Iseul is not." Karl says as he dismounts his horse, and then looks at the boulders that make up the side of the barn like building, "It looks like there are ample hand and foot holds so climbing should not be too very difficult."
"I have a 50 foot coil of rope and some spikes as well." Karl says.
OOC: If Karl does the climbing, he'll do it very cautiously...I'm hoping that gives him a nice big DM. ...the roll was 12 on a d20, afraid that might be a failure.

Iseul: "I'm up for it if someone hands me a rope and the required tools. So do we go through one of the windows or do we try to find a way in from the roof of the barn?"

"This esert is so intriguing, my friends. Yes, let's have a look on what's could be trapped in the barn and silo. maybe we'll get into deeper trouble than ever, but it seems it's the philosophy of our travel...", suggests Rollo, trying to see something in the desert light.

With the help of the spikes and rope, both Karl and Iseul reach the roof of the barn. As Jacques predicted it is quite flat and it also lacks any entry into the barn. The view to the top of the silo is not much improved, but there does not seem to be anything else up there besides the birds.
Trying one of the windows next, Iseul finds them sturdily boarded shut. With the right kind of tool or weapon the petrified boards might perhaps be shattered.

Karl shields his eyes from the sun's glare as he scans the surrounding area from the top of the barn. He is looking for signs of movement in the distance or even signs (tracks in the sand) showing where people (or monsters) have been moving. He is also looking for likely targets for the party's exploration.
Karl stays atop the barn to 'spot the rope' while Iseul climbs down and looks at the windows.

After he has made his observations and Iseul finds that the windows are solidly boarded up, Karl calls down, "So, what now? Try to pry the boards off a window, dig out the doors, or take a closer look at the tower?"

"Let's make a crack in a window to look through first," Jochi says. "I don't want to unbury any doors that something could get out of until we know what's in there."

Iseul: "The wood in these windows seems to have turned into some kind of crystalline material. Maybe we can smash it with hammer and spike or that pickaxe we bought for our 1st expedition?"
"I wonder what could have caused this transformation to the wood though?"

Nothing catches Karl's eye. The barn is not high enough to see very far, the roof of the silo would provide a better view of the surroundings.
Iseul smashes the shutters with one strong swing of the pickaxe. The inside of the barn is quite murky, as only a few thin beams of sunlight penetrate the shutters. It seems to be one big room and there is a metal walkway with a railing just inside the window.
