I just discovered a nifty little steampunk style wild west series by Mike Resnick. In general I love the concept of steam but when I start to read the books I don't like the writing style, but so far I'm really hooked on these.
There are two books out now (The Buntline Special, and The Doctor and the Kid) and according to Resnick's blog he's working on #3 and just signed a contract to do #4 next.
The U.S.A. is all of America East of the Mississippi River, with various Native American groups controlling the lands to the West. There are a few U.S. settlements, however, in the Western lands and this represents the frontier lands of the weird west. There is magic our West (mostly Medicine Men, I think, but the back of the book hints at undead) and trains and a gatling pistol. An interesting blend of the historical and the steam, and I like what Resnick has done with his history.
The first book (The Buntline Special) takes place in 1880 in Tombstone, AZ, and I think it will center around the Battle of the OK Corral. It has historical characters like the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday.
Anyway, reading this has gotten me looking for my box of Boot Hill stuff again.

| It was good. I have book #2 but got sidetracked reading some Robert E Howard. I'll get back to this shortly.
