Who is Lord Grey??? « Thread Started on Jun 22, 2012, 9:45pm »
Who is Lord Grey? As a moderator on the very ancient Shade's LARPlist I rediscovered this guy who posted there. I really hope he is healthy and well and I can get a correspondence with him. There I was in contact with an Old School Master and didn't even realize! Does anyone know who Lord Grey is? I emailed him minutes ago and await a response. His last post on Shade's was in 2008.
I am Lord Grey. I have been since before the beginning. I was there at the creation. I belonged to the "Castle & Crusade Society" of the International Federation of Wargaming lo these many, many years ago. It was through the auspices of the C&C Society that the two Charismatic leaders of Mid-west USA wargaming, David Lance Arneson and Gary Gygax began to cross-pollinate the ideas for the original Dungeons & Dragons. I knew both fellows, and they both knew me.
I was playing RPG before the publication of D&D back in 1973. I have a first edition, first-printing of the original rules. I was playing back when the rules were new or the rules did not exist and we had to think for our selves And if you search the printed scenarios by David Lance Arneson himself, you may, if your eyes are sharp and your wits are keen, find me as an NPC, but as I know where the bodies are burried, the description may not be deemed as flattering.
Along the way of life I also met the inventors of Ars Magica, one of the pair was Mark Rein Hagen -- inventor of the Vampire universe. The pair enjoyed what I was able to bring to Ars Magica, and took my own invented character into their pack of pre-generated NPC for use at conventions, et cetera. By the way, Jonathan Tweed, the other of the Ars Magica duo, is now the chief editor for AD&D.
There was the time as I stood in line for a major war game convention near San Fransico, when I outlined for some fellows from the Seattle area an idea for a game based upon decks of collectable trading cards. I wonder what ever happend to those guys?
Much have I studied as to the varieties of cultures, their folkways and their ken. But I feel as if I know nothing. There is so much out there.
I have studied Physics and Metaphysics, the Psychological and the Parapsychological. I have loved playing Call of Cthulu, though I think I am one of the few players who could actualy quality, in real life, to represent themselves as a Detective, a Journalist, a Soldier, a Diliatante, a Novelist, or a Parapsychologist. I once played a Novelist who ... well, that is a tale for another time.
I was trained by the US Army in aspects of Military Intelligence and Psychological Warfare. When I served the policy was to NOT torture, but to use other methods to ellicite information form our sources. In a sense it was LARPing for real.
A wise philosopher once said that a man must now his own limitations. I know I am not a good game master. I have done some, and the reports in feedback say that the innovaitons introduced by this writer, tha care to details and description of scene, rendered that which I presented as the acme of the RPG experience. But such effort is taxing.
My health now fails. Said but true. I fear the shadow of death approaches and life now grows slow and painful. But as the abilities of the body diminish, some aspects of the mind stay lucid, as long as I can remain focused.
My ill-health keeps me isolated, apart, and thus I do not LARP hardly at all any more. And the LARP I do is of the sort of limited actual combat, more of the sort where the mind is the tool of choice.
I would love to play, if asked, but can not promise to be able to get my self to your location. But if you can transport me, this Soul is willing even if the Body threatens to fail.
Forgive me if I remain semi-obscured. Let me go back to the healling slumber -- may sleep refesh you. Keep FIGHTING as long as you can. We will meet in Vahalla.
Is that the sound of battle in the distance? I think I hear the horns calling me. Help me to stand and hand me a sword!
I have bipolar disorder, and this sounds very, very much like someone having a manic episode.
I am glad it is not just me.
No, I do not suffer from bipolar disorder, but upon reading that text my very first impression was: "This sounds like the writings of an unbalanced person".
Since I have gotten into trouble on forums before for being overly honest in my opinions, I decided to keep them to myself in this instance...until mythmere volunteered his own.
I am not just saying this matter-of-fact; sadly, I have met quite a few unbalanced persons (whole groups in fact) that played tabletop RPGs (not D&D thankfully). I guess reading that struck a chord.

Yeah and my misguided attempt to find out who this guy is has become such a mockery. I doubt this guy will ever reveal himself after such a negative response. ;(

Yeah, the folks on DF weren't too kind, either. I suspect that you won't get quite the same degree of mockery here, but it's hard to take that post 100% serously.
Howerver, the guy does offer some "clues" (if the post is in fact, real). The big one I see is that he claims to be an NPC in Dave's work, but not presented in a kind way. In the Blackmoor and Dave Arneson section of the boards we have a list of players in Blackmoor, so I assume that his name would have to be on the list somewhere. I suppose one could take the list and the known NPC list and start to remove names. (For example, we know who played the Great Svenny, so Greg's name could be crossed off of the list.) We have a couple of old timers who actually played in some of those games, and perhaps they recognize the background presented in the post.
A second clue would be that he claims membership in the original C&C society and the IFW. I'm pretty sure that print runs for THE DOMESDAY BOOK newsletter were only 60-80 copies, so that helps us estimate the size of the pool of people we'd be looking at to find "Lord Grey." I don't know offhand if a roster of the C&C Society is out there or not, but it should be a relatively short list.
Third clue is the overlap of knowing both Gary and Dave. I suppose that clue traces back to the C&C Society, so it probably doesn't add much information.
On the other hand, this may be another feeble attempt for someone to establish an "I was there" background. Every so often you get someone who says that they played D&D before it was D&D, somehow getting ahold of a pre-publication version. As these were in very limited quantities it's not impossible, but improbable that such a person would remain hidden for so long and then suddenly emerge to share "stories" of what it was like.
Are there other "Lord Grey" posts, or just the one? This one post is the only one I've seen here or DF.

I'm with Finarvyn ... I don't get the feeling anyone here is mocking you or your post. As for me? I wish I could help you. I was an active gamer at that time, but it took D&D a while to filter down to Texas, especially small town Texas. I was so far removed, geographically speaking, from the area in which the reported events took place there is no assistance I can give.

I decided we didn't need two of these threads. I'm moving this one to the Blackmoor section, since it seems more likely to deal with Dave's campaign than anywhere else.

I can't comment on the veracity of the piece, but his repeated use of Arnesons rarely mentioned middle name does strike me as more likely to have come from somebody who knew and gamed with Dave. It would be worth looking into anyway.

Actually, that makes it less likely to me. I've never heard ANY of his friends or family use his middle name, or call him anything but "Dave." (or Dad, or Grampa)

It doesn't seem like most of Arneson's group had much contact with Gary's group (Gronan excepted), but I guess it depends on what is meant by having "known" Gary.

There is one other clue, his email that was listed on Shade's was msolac@hotmail.com and all searches to find out if he posted anywhere else were all in vain. That was the reason I was posting about him for information about who he was and his story. Does the name msolac ring a bell?

Not on a regular basis, but on the other hand, the wargaming hobby wasn't that big. Gen Con was about 250 to 300 people and we all pretty much knew each other at least casually. I knew who Mike Carr was, for instance, because he ran "Dawn Patrol" every morning at Gen Con.
