This topic comes up occasionally. A few thoughts:

1. I don't think there is much demand for it. I know of a few people who own copies of AiF but no one who actually plays it. The game is sort of complex and convoluted in spots and (to me) is more of an archeological artifact than a game to play.

2. It's pretty different than D&D in many ways, so the rules wouldn't fit the WotC SRD very well. We all know that it's possible to restate rules, but often clones use the SRD as a starting point and go from there.

I'd echo Marv, here. I own, have tried to read.... but have never had anything but a "nostaligic twinge" to even want to attempt to play. I'm quite certain the response I'd get if I tried to start-up a game, it's difficult enough to get much interest in anything old-school. Heck, just getting enough interested initially to play GangBusters, Star Frontiers, Boot Hill, or OD&D, is a slim breath of air! (of course, after the first taste..... many come back asking for more!)

How about something like an AiF reimagined through the SRD rules? I guess it could be a fun experiment if nothing else... :)

Aside from being just a d100 system with a roll under resolution, I think too AiF is too overcomplex to be turned into a retroclone.

Anyway, maybe a streamlined version could be made with no huge effort.

IMO, Dan Boggs’s publications fill the niche.

I get the itch to do a clone of AiF at times until I pull out the books and start making notes. I am intrigued by the game but I think the interest is more about Arneson and his involvement. I feel like there is a good game lurking somewhere in the rules but it is at least one good edit away from being comprehended. Parts of the system are very interesting while others are overly complex. I think the best bet might be to use the "good" bits, modify the "bad" bits, and design a game inspired by AiF.

Yeah; if you start with Dragons at Dawn and allow only wizards and warriors, use a % based to hit table, and use only the elfin magic system, you would have a game that would feel an awful lot like a streamlined AiF.
