Love the concept of the collectable deck. Helps one get rid of those pesky low rolls. :D

Sad to say that I wouldn't be surprised to have this become an actual game.

Jokes apart, the latest Legends and Lore blogs by Mike Mearls seem to point in this direction.
It seems they are getting worried by "edition wars." I suppose they see the results of a very fragmented market. If D&D was made "easier" and "closer in spirit" to the previous editions, they might get the old fan base, the people who fled to Paizo et al., and new players (who are agnostic in this respect.)

Unless the 5ed rules can fit into 110 US Trade-sized pages and they return to the Quentin title font, I'll pass if this bears fruit. :P

Oddly enough, I would sort of welcome a move toward a more card based game. It would make the thing a hell of a lot easier to run. Although if they did you can pretty much guarantee a collectible element, which would be bad.

It's interesting to see WotC so concerned with the fragmentation of the player base now, since it is almost entirely their fault there is a fragmentation. Everything from OD&D through 2nd edition AD&D was not so different that you couldn't use the products together with minimal adjustment or work. 3rd started veering away and requiring more work, now 4th has taken it much further away. And we see Pathfinder picking up a lot of gamers that 4th could have kept if it had not made such a radical departure.

I'm *very* curious to see where 5th edition really goes with the rules. I'm hoping they dial it back and make it more like D&D was for over 30 years, but we'll have to wait and see. I don't really envy Mearls and the rest, since they are looking at some difficult decisions ahead.

I'm hoping that there is no 5th edition. I'm hoping Hasbro gives up on the franchise, and some rich dude amongst us buys the rights to the intellectual property, and turns it back into what it should be... A SIMPLE ROLE-PLAYING GAME with PLENTY OF ROOM FOR HOUSE RULES AND PERSONAL INTERPRETATION. :-X

I think Mr. Mearls really has his work cut out for him.

The fragmentation of the market has greatly diminished the power of the D&D brand.

I'd be curious to know how many people would come back if they released a new ruleset based on 3.5 instead of 4 (essentially release a pathfinder clone). Sure some people would stay with 4e, some with Pathfinder, but would enough come back into the fold? Or are we now in a 'post-D&D' era where fragmentation is the norm?

Thank god the OSR is all compatible. Though I guess DCC RPG is challenging that.

I'll play any version of D&D I can find. My preference is for OD&D and OAD&D and I'd play in one of those before any other, but I'll sit at any table where dice are being rolled.

I will say, however, that any new edition would have to be pretty amazing before I would spend a lot of money on it. Mostly because I have all I need to run a game right now.

Interesting to note that since Bill Slavicsek left WotC suddenly, there are speculations of a 5th edition starting to filter into the WotC boards more and more. Nothing like a surprise to fuel conspiracy theories! :D

A 5th ed so soon would be odd...rumour machine will be set to max
